Maid and Matron of Honor....who stands next to me?

Karin, on August 11, 2015 at 10:23 AM Posted in Planning 0 20

I need some help. I am having a Maid and Matron of Honor. My Maid of Honor is one of my best friends and the Matron of Honor is my sister. Here's the dilemma....my Matron (sister) has done nothing to help me with our wedding except complain about almost everything, even when being asked to help, she said she doesn't have the time. My Maid of Honor (friend) has been phenomenal with helping me with whatever I ask of her and then some. So....here's the question....do I have my sister stand next to me, because we are sisters or should I have my Maid stand next to me, the one who has been there through everything with me and then some?

I mean, i think you're just fishing for people to say your friend so i don't know what you're asking?

I also have a Maid and Matron of Honor. My Maid of Honor is my sister and my Matron of Honor is my best friend.

I went with my sister (Maid of Honor) as the one who would stand next to me.

I'm going to have her hold my bouquet and my Matron of Honor will hold FH's ring. That way they're both involved.

I would do what Lauren did and have one stand next to you and the other do an equally important task.

I am in the same boat as you and Lauren, so I am interested to see what people say. I have a Matron (sister) and Maid (best friend). I think I am going to have my sister stand next to me at the ceremony and my best friend sit next to me at dinner.

I like Lauren's idea too! or maybe I'll have my sister stand next to me and hold my bouquet and my BFF fix my train?

I like the idea of the other fixing the train too!

For me personally, I'm having my sister first. She isn't doing anything to help either, since she lives out of state...but she's my sister. She was my first friend. Even though we don't always get along, and even though we still fight and argue and disagree, at the end of the day, she's family.

Its your decision, really, so do what you feel right about doing. I wouldn't base it on whether or not she's helped. BMs/MOHs don't have to do anything but show up in the dress you picked, realistically...

I have both also, but since my matron of honor is my brother's wife and my brother happens to be the best man I was going to have them walk together and have my matron of honor stand next to me. Plus my sister is my maid of honor and she really don't like that much attention on her lol. But I am curious to see if there is an actual order to this.

This is also the problem. I feel obligated to have my sister, because we are family, but like I said, she hasn't helped with anything, like the Maid has done (she has planned showers, has called vendors, salons, wedding site, etc).

I feel that the person who helps out more, should stand next to me, but I do not want to cause conflict within my family

If you don't want to cause conflict, yet have your friend just find a stupid "order" for everyone. For example- do it by height order (tallest first if your friend is taller, or shortest first if she's taller). Then continue the order after your Maid and matron of honor.

ETA- i wouldn't tell anyone your reasoning. Your, "but she helped more" will be met with "but she's family" and i think you know that. so just find a stupid reason and stick to it if you feel strongly about having her first.

I would have your sister stand next to you. I think that no one feels slighted that way because it's your sister, so what can anyone really say? But if you put your friend next to you I could see your sister and family being upset.

How is your relationship with your sister when you're not planning a wedding? I mean, is how much help they're giving to your wedding really the litmus test of your relationship?

I think you should have you prefer next to you but as suggested above, give them both a task while they are standing there. One can fix your train, one holds FH ring, and the one you choose to stand by your side (likely your best friend) can hold the bouquet. If your sister seems upset about not standing next to you, you could have her be your witness on the licence.

I have 2 also and I'm having my sister stand next to me. I feel like in most family's just to keep the peace you should have your sister. In the grand scheme its really not that big of a deal and your best friend should understand.

That being said I like the idea of them doing different things. I'm going to have my sister stand next to me and hold my bouquet and then have my best friend hold FHs ring since I did the same for her in September. I like that idea.

I agree that you should probably have your sister stand next to you. No one will argue that since she is your sister. However, you will still want to give your friend another important task.

I have two MOH's, both are my sisters. I am just going to give them equally important tasks, even though one will be standing next to me. I don't think you should just automatically give it to your friend because she has helped with more things.

Even before reading your question i thought to myself "well if one is a sister then i would have the sister stand next to her"

so my answer is sister, sorry. if you really want your friend next to you then just say so without being mean about it. the whole tit for tat is childish.

Thank you everyone for your input, it is greatly appreciated!!

I will have my Matron (sister) stand next to me and hold my bouquet and fix my train. I will have my Maid (BFF) next to her holding my FH's ring. They will both be signing the license as well as his 2 best men.

I will also have my Maid sit next to me at the reception and my Matron sit next to her.

I am having 2 MOHs...both friends. FH is having 2 best men...one is his brother and one is our friend...who happens to be married to one of my MOH. During the wedding we will have his brother stand next to him and then because of the way Im doing the head table to include fhs brother wife - Im putting our friend next to fh. We are having 2 of each because there was no deciding who was more important etc.

I am having a maid and a matron. My maid is my sister, and my matron is my cousin. My maid will be standing next to me; and matron beside her. However, because of the size of my dress, I will have both of them fixing my dress. My sister will be holding my bouquet; and my cousin will be holding FH's ring. That way I feel like they will have equally important jobs during the ceremony and one will not feel left out.

Following....I have a Maid and Matron of Honor, and BOTH are my sisters! I think I am having my Matron of honor go first because my Maid of honor is much taller than our Best Man, so that kind of helps!
