Hey guys!

My mom is very excited at the possibility of hiring a magician that does close-up magic to entertain guests during cocktail hour. He would mingle from group to group performing close-up illusions. Initially I said no right away and now she keeps pushing for it and showing me articles of people having magicians at weddings where everyone loves it blah blah blah. Has anyone ever seen a magician at a wedding? Do you think it would be a good idea to help break up the time in cocktail hour and get conversations going? Our wedding feel is going to be "formal fun"-- long dresses/suits, but we want people to go crazy and dance/drink too. Is the magician horribly tacky or would it be a fun unique touch? Any opinions are appreciated.

Then you've just never been to a good cocktail hour. It's pretty much the best part of weddings in my region.

I'd hate to have my eating, drinking and mingling be interrupted by a magician - ugh. I don't understand the need to constantly entertain guests. People know how to have fun and it definitely isn't having a coin pulled out of my ear. Just. Say. No.

Ick, no magic. Tacky and childish. Party tricks don’t belong at a wedding.

LOL!!! This topic is awesome. Smiley xd My FH and I love a good magic show (we actually just went to one this past weekend), but I have never seen a magician at a wedding and I think it would be kind of odd!

It’s cringey to me. I’d hate being interrupted mid-conversation and forced to watch and feign interest in the poor guy’s magic tricks. I’m happy with cocktails, snacks and the chance to catch up with old friends and meet some of the other guests.

We're having a magician. I think it will be fun. We aren't doing the evening wedding with dinner and dancing. We're having a much more laid back event with games and whatnot.

Depends on the style. I think it would be a little odd at a formal event.

Never in person, but I've seen it on Four Weddings! Personally I prefer to mingle during cocktail hour so I can dance for the whole reception, but if it's something she is set on and willing to pay for it, it may not be worth the fight with her. I may avoid the magician by running to the bar... Good magicians can be really impressive, so as long as it's not your second cousin's roommate or something relationship like that then I don't think there's any harm.

I used to work at a bar that would have a magician for close up illusions at big parties. It was so awkward and uncomfortable. I felt like I was placating a kid to sit and watch when I had somewhere I was going or someone I was taking to before I was interrupted. I've never been to a wedding where I needed help breaking the ice or finding people to talk to. And that includes a wedding with my very recently ex husband and his new girlfriend in attendance and only the bride as a friend. Seriously, I would tell my mom absolutely not with the magician.

If it’s a formal event, then no.
