Lunch reception--how to make it NOT boring?!?

Barb, on February 25, 2010 at 5:23 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

We're getting married on June 12th and are having an early wedding ceremony starting at 10:30 am and the reception is to begin at noon. To cut costs we decided not to serve alcohol (it cut costs by more than a thousand bucks!) and figured not that many ppl would drink so early in the day anyway. I'm nervous though because I dont want our wedding to be BORING- any ideas of how we can make it fun?

Is your reception still located in large room type setting? I think it can still be like any other reception with dancing/bouquet toss/garter toss/cake cutting......the usual.

For me personally, I don't drink alcohol so that wouldn't bother me at all. I'd still have lots of fun, but I am the minority and I know lots of people need drinks at weddings.

I have heard of some couples playing different wedding games at the reception, that is a possibility.

Do you have a theme picked out? If not, pick one that you can tie things into. I was at one a while back that was a casino theme and she got TONS of things from oriental trading and even found a small slot machine to rent really cheap that took tokens and each guest got one token to "try their luck" and if one one person won they got the option of a dance with the bride or groom. One of the best men won and danced with the groom...it was FUNNY....but fun all in all.

Where are you having your reception? This might help us better answer the question. For instance if it is in a park you can set up games and whatnot..

I have been to two lunch weddings with no alcohol, neither of them had dancing and it was more like going out to lunch with your friends. You sat around and ate and talked to them. It was fine.

The reception is at this modern italian restaurant.. we have two floors to ourselves- the first floor is going to be the dining area and the top floor is actually a really cute rooftop where we'll have dancing and cake, etc.

I agree about choosing a "theme". It's a great way to create a cohesive overall look for your celebration and you can have lots of fun tying little creative (and DIY) ideas into it. Check out the following blogs for LOTs of great ideas:

As for the alcohol dilemma, I think it's fine to not serve alcohol. If you're not worried about it, no one else should be either. That being said, you could always create a few "mock-tails" and dress them up with cute straws with (perhaps) personalized straw flags or cute ribbon wrapped around the glasses. You could have your stationer create a "drink" menu that you could frame so people know that alcohol is not in the drinks, but if you pick some recipes that have lots of yummy flavors, they might not even notice that there's no booze in them.

I think as long as you have dinner and dancing, how could it possibly be boring. Our ceremony is at 11 with the reception beginning at 1. We're not serving alcohol either but it never crossed my mind that it would be "boring".

My wedding is coming up, and it seems like we are having lunch with no alcohol. I meant 2 bottles of champagne just for cheers. I have no idea how to entertain our guests since there is no dance floor. Smiley sad
