Lumpy Boobage Dilemma

Brittany, on January 11, 2017 at 3:51 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

Hello all!

I was so excited to finally pick up my wedding dress after ordering it months before... but when I put it on, it just wasn't right...

Specifically the boob area: in this new dress, there was a corset and some sort of boob padding that was lumpy/bubbly. I'm a flat chested girl - which I don't mind - but they definitely aren't going to fill up the boob cup enough to smooth out the bumps. Has anyone else had issues with a lumpy boobage area? Is this a common thing that alterations can fix? Or is this an error from the person who made the dress? The one I tried on originally didn't have anything like that in it.

The bridal salon said that an alterations person would be able to do whatever I wanted to it, but I'm just nervous that maybe it was sewn wrong or something?

This is a strapless sweatheart neck lace Maggie Sottero dress in case that helps anyone picture things. Let me know your thoughts!

Thanks!

Alterations should be able to bring the chest in so it sits flush against your skin/chest, and I would have cups sewn in to eliminate the need for a bra and to help shape and/or fill out the chest area.

Do you have a photo of your lumpy boobage?

Alterations should be able to take care of it. If you think it's a production error then you need to let your salon know so they can reach out to the designer and get it fixed. My seamstress sewed my longline bra into my dress, which helps it sit correctly.

I don't have a photo of my dress, but I went online and searched to see if it was common with the dress... and found this photo which has a similar issue on the left boob.

I had a similar issue with my dress because the boning wasn't sitting correctly on my chest. Since I'm wearing a stick on bra, I don't need the boning so my seamstress removed it and the bumpy problem went away.

ETA: My dress has straps though, so I don't know if removing the boning on a strapless would be possible. It might mess up the structure and make it fall down more? Not sure, but I would ask your seamstress because I like the way mine looks without boning a lot more.

Sometimes they add these weird foam pads to strapless dresses. I have a non-wedding gown that has a similar thing and the pads kind of lump up because I've never bothered to have it tailored. During alterations you can ask for the pads to be removed and for them to add cups as others have said. It may cost a bit because they will have to open the dress up. Otherwise, you can try silicon inserts, if you're open to adding a bit more volume up top. They may be able to fill up the area between your body and the padding and smooth things out.

I don't think I can really see what the problem is in the photo, is it the boning? Or the cleavage? The photo looks normal to me. If it's the boning, that can be removed during alterations, I had a similar problem with the boning in my dress.

As a fellow IBTC member I had the same problem with my prom dress way back when, even after altering it.. Seems like some dresses are made to work better with bigger busted women.. Hopefully you can find a great seamstress to fix the problem!

I almost bought a Maggie Sottero dress (it had straps and a different bodice than yours) and opted not to, in part because the chest area seemed very stiff and just looked off to me, and I have boobs. I'm sure your seamstress can correct the issue if you bring your concerns to their attention, and the picture you just posted doesn't look noticeably lumpy to me anyway.

That picture isn't helpful at all quite frankly. We can't help you if we can't see the dress on you.

Unfortunately, I don't have a photo of me in the dress... when I told the salon about the lumpiness, they tugged on it and ripped the lace, so they wanted to have their alterations person fix the tear for me... (which has turned into a separate issue - because the alterations person put another tear/hole in the very front of the dress when she was "fixing" the first one... Smiley sad nothing is ever easy) Anyway, I was hoping whoever had a similar issue with the boning/padding would be able to settle my nerves, and you guys have! I now feel like this is something the alterations people can handle and I won't have lumpy-looking boobs. Thank you so much for all of your responses!

Sounds like you need to just get your dress out there and find a new alterations person to work on the dress. I would livid if someone who was supposed to be fixing my dress further damaged it.

Hey! Currently going through whether or not I should remove boning. My dress has straps too. Do you have before and after pics you could share?
