Lounge Area ? Yay or Nay

Future Mrs.P, on February 17, 2016 at 9:58 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

When FH and I finish started planning we wanted a small lounge area in the reception area to create a party- like feel. I originally only budget $600 for this. Now that I have started to get quotes together , I'm not sure if it's even worth the cost. From the quotes I have received so far most are recommending I get at least 2 sofas and 4 chairs with 2 coffee tables. Which the average seems to be around $ 1,000 with delivery and setup.

I don't think it's necessary but I do think it would get used. Anyone who didn't want to dance and wanted to talk at our wedding, just stayed at their table. Are your tables going to be taken down after dinner? Our dance floor was separated from dining room by a half wall. The DJ Played the music at 1/4 the volume in the dining are so guests could still hear announcements (like bouquet toss) but could still converse.

I think its more of a question of if you want to spend that money

I don't think it's necessary unless it's for a cocktail area where there is no other seating. During the reception, most will stay at their table. It does look pretty, but could be a waste of money.

I wouldn't bother. $1000 to provide alternative seating for maybe 8 people? Save your money.

I love the idea, but I feel like it isn't worth the extra cost. People will be fine up dancing or back at their table. If you have the money and really want it, I would go for it because it does look nice!

@NowASeptMrs: The guest tables will be up all night . Before the choose the venue we already discussed doing this. Once we booked our venue then we realized it would be a bunch of unused space since we are having 7-8 tables total. I was thinking putting the lounge area on the wall side of the dance floor .

Our venue had a lounge area with a fireplace; it was very nice. But I wouldn't pay for it Smiley smile

We had one, we had a higher decline rate than expected and ended up removing a few tables and adding some sofas and end tables. We did it back by the bar and people hung out there all night, especially between dancing and after dinner.

A lounge area needs a wall separating it from the music. Modern music is too loud to permit good conversation in the same room. At a large social gathering there will be some people who prefer chatting to dancing, and some who would like to chat between dances. A true lounge area is very nice for that -- but without a sound barrier you won't get the benefit. It works best in the situation described by Tina Bobina -- where it is part of the venue and does not require set-up. An easier way to get the same effect, is to have the band set up to the side of the dance floor rather than in front of the dance floor at the head of the room, and have their speakers set up facing *up* the room: onto the dance-floor but away from the table seating. Then they can blast their sound at the dancers, without drowning out the conversation.

I think if you have the money and want to do it, go for it! Lots of brides have something that others deem a "waste of money". If it's important or fun to you, why not? We had a photobooth... not necessary or mandatory but we thought it was so we splurged!

We are doing a lounge area. Only because our venue is two stories. Some people will be sitting down stairs. Others on one half of the upstairs. The other side is empty since we will only have 100 guests. That will be turned into our lounge area and that's where our ohoto booth will be as well I loved the idea when they brought it up!

See if your venue includes any of this. Mine does and it's going to only cost $500 extra.

Love the idea and the look of the lounge, but if it's causing you budget stress then I'd skip it!

I love the idea and the look - but definitely don't extend the budget if it's not something that you can make work! (What WWLynnie said Smiley smile )

I like it because it does encourage guest to leave the table and mingle a bit more. I've also seen them set up during a happy hour (happy hours with no seating annoy me, I feel like women in heels need to sit a bit). FH & his friends usually stand around talking & drinking in the corner nearest to the bar at weddings, I'd like to have a lounge area for that reason. But also we are renting everything for our wedding, nothing included, so it doesn't change the price that much for us. But like anything don't stretch you budget.

Nay. I would only do this if it was already provided by the venue. I don't see the value in putting money toward it.

I don't think it's worth the money. And I agree with @Richard, that it will likely be camped out by a few guests, discouraging mingling for them.
