Losing Weight

Alexandra, on April 25, 2021 at 12:41 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4
When I went dress shopping I was closer to 130 lbs and bought a dress that fit perfectly. Just needed hemming. (In 2019 for a 2020 wedding.)

We had to postpone because virus and that's ok. Safety first.
I've since graduated nursing school and work when in the past 7 months I've dropped from over 120lbs to 109lbs. My dress no longer fits. I can have it fixed, but the problem is I keep losing weight. 6lbs in the last 4w alone.
The dress is not a corset so I can't accommodate by just tying tighter.
I do have a reception dress, which is a corset, but was obviously planning on surprising everyone then with it and I wanted to give him that white dress moment, as my reception dress is not white.
Should I risk trying to get it altered and hoping the weight loss stops, just wear my reception dress the whole time or get a new dress in my new size? We marry in October.

I would try to alter the dress you have. My SIL is a size 4 and bought a sample dress fit and flare at a size 12, and she was able to get it altered to fit her great. Take it to seamstress and see what they say.

I worked in bridal for three years. A dress can typically be altered down two or three sizes without issue. If you’re concerned, see if you can find out what your measurements were at 120 (when you bought the dress the store should have taken your measurements) so you can compare to what your measurements are now. Most people don’t lose weight perfectly evenly, so you may not even need alterations in every area.

I agree with PPs about getting your original dress altered - but I'm wondering about your weight loss. Are trying to lose weight? If not, have you talked to your doctor? (Even if there isn't an underlying physical cause, "just" pandemic stress, maybe he/she/they can help you find a solution so that you stop losing.)

I have been there with the unintentional weight loss! A few years ago I accidentally went from 110 lbs down to 95 lbs. Not weight I could afford to loose! Turned out it was because of a medication I was taking and I had to completely change my diet to compensate. Definitely try and get that figured out ASAP, if you can!

As far as the dress goes, if you still love it I would go to a seamstress to see if they can alter it down to your current size in time for the wedding. If you don't still love it and have the money to look for a second dress then that is not a bad option either.
