Losing weight between alterations

Hi all!

I have a custom made couture bridal gown. I've apparently gone down a dress size in between taking the measurements for the dress and its completion. I wasn't trying to lose weight, and I'm still not.

Recently I've been getting into doing fitness classes at our local community center (Recently as in a week or two before the completion of the dress. I doubt my swimming instruction class is why I've lost so much weight) I've never been into exercise before, but I've had fun and I feel good knowing I'm doing something that's improving both my mental and physical health. My work schedule is tight and I'm only guaranteed a day off on Sundays. I saw they're offering a spin class on Sundays just before the yoga class I'm planning to take next month.

The timing is perfect, on Sundays and 20 minutes before another class I'm already planning on taking. My only concern is losing more weight during my already extensive dress alterations.

Maybe this is the wrong place to ask, maybe the answer is obvious and I'm just looking for someone to give me "permission" to do what I want Smiley xd Do you think I'll lose too much weight and mess up the alterations if I do both classes?

You’ll want to set up a final alterations appointment within the last couple weeks to a month anyway, even for a custom made dress. I ordered custom, and despite my dressmaker having my exact measurements (my hips are a larger size than my top), she made it all to one size so I was swimming in the top half when it arrived. Working out is healthy for your body and mind, so I would just continue to do it and accept whatever changes to your body that brings, and then make the final adjustments to your dress closer to the wedding. The only thing you need to worry about is being like several sizes down a month before because there’s usually a limit to how much they can take in or let out a dress before they have to completely reconstruct it, which takes time and costs a lot.

I agree with everything Kimberly said and would only add that you can increase your calories slightly to compensate for the workouts to avoid losing weight if your goal is to maintain now that your dress has been completed.

Hi there! I'm a Nov 2023 bride too! My weight has fluctuated the last few months especially. My dress arrived not long ago too after ordering it in January and fit a bit different when I tried it on when it arrived at the bridal shop a few weeks ago! I have my first alteration appointment next weekend and anticipate my body shifting a bit more from also incorporating more fitness and work outs into my routine too, and as the wedding approaches. I've had similar thoughts on how the dress may fit even closer to the wedding - but if it's one size smaller I don't imagine it being a huge issue for a seamstress to take the dress in to fit your latest measurements. I think it's also almost anticipated that a bride's body may change in the months she has the actual dress and up til the wedding day (at least a month or few weeks prior especially). I don't think it's uncommon to need some final or extra adjustments, it's also not uncommon for brides to switch up their workout routines, diets, or be more active because many want to look and feel their best for the big day. I was told by the boutique that a 15-20 lb difference from when the dress is ordered and eventually altered should be fine to work with, it also depends on how the dress is structured too. But if you're happy with your current sizing and weight, and have any concerns about alterations, I'd suggest what Karissa said as well - to make sure you're eating enough calories to maintain the weight you're at now. I anticipate similar, loosing up to a dress size in the next few months, I'd imagine I go in net weekend for initial adjustments with where I am at now, definitely need it hemmed, not sure how long that may take, but going back in to try it once it's hemmed and bust adjusted, I'd imagine if I lost any weight during any fittings they'd just make note to adjust again, or do so, and I'd like to think there is at least one or two more fittings/alteration appointments if needed a few weeks before the wedding day for this reason and to make sure it fits the best it can. Can anyone tell their stories of how their alteration appointments had gone?
