Looking for something similar to handfasting

Caleb, on February 8, 2017 at 9:26 AM Posted in Planning 0 6

When I look up "handfasting", it seems to be all about tying thin cords around the bride and groom's hands. But there was something else that, as far as I know, is also referred to as handfasting, but which I've been unable to find reference to.

What I'm looking for is where the bride and groom clasp each other's arm (not just holding hands), and their combined arms are wrapped with a very wide ribbon. The ribbon spans across their arms, rather than trying to be tied in a knot.

Has anyone else heard of this, and know what it is called? I'd like to find more information on it, but all of my searches return the same results.

Caleb, you will probably get more responses if you change your avatar.

I haven't heard of this but I bet if you explain it to your officiant, he or she would be willing to incorporate it Smiley smile

I'm pretty sure it's all the same, regardless of what cord/ ribbon is used. I could be wrong of course.

It's a modern hand fastening. Waaaaay back when the bride and groom used to leave their hands tied together for the honeymoon. Then it was just the wedding day, then just the ceremony. Now some people choose to just be loosely wrapped in a ribbon to symbolically tie themselves together because it's prettier.

Thanks Nonna. Took me a few minutes to figure out how to change my avatar. Smiley smile

But yeah, it may all be variations on the same thing. But since the one I'm remembering didn't actually try to tie a knot, it made me wonder if it was different. My officiant doesn't seem to be familiar with it, so I was trying to find something online to point her to.
