Long travel (but exciting) versus low-key for honeymoon?

Teresa, on August 18, 2022 at 9:56 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 12

We have a trip booked to Oaxaca City, Mexico, via Mexico City. It's a place we've both been wanting to visit for the food, culture, sights, etc. We love to travel together. But with flying being so questionable right now and our flight time (two stops each way, about 14 hours total), we're getting cold feet.

Meanwhile, a friend of ours happened to offer their beach home near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We'd have a whole place to ourselves, easy beach access, even a car to use. We're thinking of making it a road trip and stopping to see friends along the way, or driving through Charleston for the food (as you can see, good food is a big priority for us!). I don't feel nearly as excited as I do about going to Mexico, but after all the stress and planning of the past 6 months, hanging around near a beach and drinking cocktails on their porch is sounding kind of nice.

If we don't go to Mexico now, we'll call this our "mini-moon" and take our actual honeymoon next year.

My question - has anyone flown recently and had any mishaps (delays, cancellations, etc.)?

And I'm kind of taking a poll - which would you choose? Smiley smile

Both of your vacation ideas sound lovely!!! I recently took a big international trip (1 yr post wedding) which was originally planned as a honeymoon. I am so glad we didn’t do this trip 2 days after our wedding. Instead we did a North Carolina beach vacation becuse travel was still a bit iffy in 2021. The honeymoon we took was Very low key. It required basically no planning. Would not have traded it for the world!!! We had a great time.

The international trip that we took in summer of 2022 took loads of time to plan and organize and lots of energy went into leading up to it. If I had been wedding planning at the same time, I don’t think the trip would have been as enjoyable and I wouldn’t have been able to plan the trip very well.

That being said, I have flown and know people who have flown. It was smooth sailing for us, a long delay on our return flight though because there weren’t enough gates. One of my family members recently traveled and had zero delays or issues.

    Good luck whatever u decide!!

Thanks! I should also add that we are now two weeks from departure (wherever we choose). I think we became so indecisive because deep down we both know we need a nice break, but we also have such a great time when we travel together exploring new places. And my (now husband) won't have another two weeks off until next year, so we feel the pressure to make it count.

We'll sleep on it - yet again!

    Hello Teresa,

I would hop on that offer so quick. Sounds like a win/win situation. You only have to put gas in your car, stop at the liquor store, get some groceries or pick which restaurant to eat at. No stress involved at all.

I have not flown since April 2017. My Dad owns timeshare, so my sister and I flew to Puerto Vallarta. It was memorable. Especially since my Dad paid for everything. Good Luck! Enjoy your mini moon.

We are waiting six months to take a cruise or a trip to Paris/London.

    Best regards.

I flew for 4th of July weekend, checked a bag, and everything arrived where it should and went according to schedule! I think if you and your husband both make as much use of your carry-ons as possible and try to keep any checked items to as few bags as possible, it would be fun to go to Mexico!

I flew in June and checked bags - the only issue I had was a single delayed flight (they needed a flight crew). Having said that, my in-laws were just stuck in Italy for a week because of a ground crew strike.

Flying is so hit or miss right now I know people that have had horror stories being stuck in the airport for 48 hrs and luggage getting lost for days and then other people who have had no issues at all. If you do travel and check your bags just make sure you have anything important and few clothing items with you in case your luggage gets lost. Personally the SC trip sounds amazing after a wedding and all the wedding stress. But it really depends on what you and your partner are looking for. Whatever you decide have fun!

My parents just flew 4 days after my MIL. My MIL had such a delay she thought she was going to have to reschedule the flight. My parents had zero issues either way. All 3 did say that the airport was crazy crowded though.
My husband and I chose to drive instead of fly because I’m pregnant and didn’t want to get stranded.
I think either trip sounds nice. Personally something nice and relaxing after the stress of wedding planning was perfect. We went to Disney and just enjoyed the resorts. I think relaxing on the beach is just what you need. Sight seeing can be tiring and you may not enjoy it as much if you’re tired from all the wedding activities.

I just flew to Europe- we had 2 flights delayed (round trip) for about 1 hour each and thus had issues in customs but the trip was so worth it despite the hassle. I wouldn’t worry about your trip- just give yourself a bit longer on connections if you can and then it shouldn’t be a problem. Mexico is a beautiful country and shouldn’t be put on hold for what you think might be a hassle. There will always be some sort of concern for luggage, airline, distance, etc. Make the most of the time you have!
I personally don’t understand why people choose to have a mini-moon- I understand that there’s financial reasons and what not, but it’s considered the first trip together so to me, it’s a honeymoon. I guess in my mind, all sequential trips are just trips 😬🤷🏻‍♀️
My vote is Mexico now! Smiley smile

Just wanted to add, my husband and I are going to The French Polynesia which will be a 21 hour travel day with 3 flights. No flight is too long for a wonderful trip!

I totally agree with you about naming trips as honeymoons or just trips! For me, my honeymoon was the trip we took 2 days after our wedding, even though it was downsized due to covid. A year later, we went to Europe and everyone kept saying “oh, you’re finally going on your honeymoon” and I kept having to say, “no, we already took our honeymoon, this is just a trip!”

However, after like 75 people saying the Europe trip was our honeymoon, I didn’t have the energy to correct them anymore. 😭😭😭😭😭

Oh I’m sorry you had that experience with having to correct people! It can be such a hassle to repeatedly tell people you’ve already had a honeymoon.
I think some people also don’t view certain trips as honeymoons if they’re not the “traditional” lay on a tropical beach somewhere in paradise. The best ones to me seem like the ones where you get to explore more things together whether that be hiking, touring ancient ruins, or seeing something both people have always wanted to see. As much as I’m looking forward to ours, I wish we were able to do our first choice of the Galapagos, but unfortunately there were some government/military travel restrictions through parts of South America to get to the Galapagos that we just couldn’t justify risking safety. Hopefully it’ll be a trip sometime down the road

I agree about the flight time - normally I'm not put off by airports/flying/flight times. We are hoping to go to Hawaii next year - it just wasn't in the cards for us this year - and that's 11+ hours from the East Coast.

I also have serious FOMO, so that doesn't help me with any decision! Smiley laugh Either way, we're going to be together, enjoying each other's company and taking it all in, wherever we are.

    And French Polynesia sounds amazing!
