Long table vrs small round tables

EmilyJ, on March 11, 2016 at 8:26 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

The other night I went to this open house that was held in my wedding venue. I walked up to the dining room, and was just blown away by this long table with 3 huge centerpieces that were basically the same as mine.

I've been a by nervous about seating because my entire family doesn't even fill out a table of 6 and I didn't want to have to place one of my friends with my parents or anything like this.

Would this long table be a good idea to combine both families at it? We only invited 78 people, so I'm worried with 12 at the table it's just going to be like 3-4 "regular people tables" around and it may make guest feel like they are not as welcome?

And then the whole conversation thing.

Thoughts?

I don't think it would make them feel less welcomed. People are used to seeing a "special table" at receptions i.e. bridal/kings tables. I also really like long tables and am disappointed we won't have them. Would it work to have all the tables be long?

You might be over thinking things a bit with the seating assignments. We're having a small wedding and we're mixing and matching people like crazy. We're basing seating on who will get along together not whether they're family or not.

If you loved it go for it. We are having a bigger wedding so even though I loved the idea of big long tables through the ballroom there isn't enough for our guests to sit comfortably with elbow room. Round it is. But if your guests will be able to sit comfortably and you liked the look go for it! Don't over think though on average guests only sit in there designated seat less than an hour so don't freak out to much on who is where.

As far as conversation goes, I tend to think conversations are easier at the long oval or rectangular tables... a round table has SUCH a large amount of space between you and the person opposite you, whereas the long tables have a much smaller distance. I feel like at a round table you are stuck talking to your date, and the person on your other side whereas at a long table you can speak to those on either side of you as well as those across the table. (I am going with the assumption that the music is loud, so conversations are impossible unless the person is physically close to you)

That aside... I LOVE when a couple has long guest tables because the decor we can do is so amazing! It opens your decor options up SO much... (if you want to see what I mean let me know!)

So my vote is... yes to long tables!

    @centerpiece

This was how they had the table the other day. My flowers are basically smaller versions of this. But this. This took my breath away.

Well that picture is GORGEOUS! I'm not sure what the rest of the venue looks like, however, my only concern would be if long tables would fit around the room nicely? Typically you have a lot more freedom with set up with smaller round tables. But I do love how that picture looks!

@nikki it would only be one long table for immediate family from both sides, then smaller round tables around it.

As for room? Dancing and the bar are downstairs, so no worries there.

    Hmmm

I think its ok to sit everyone together. I love the look of long tables. We are doing a mixture of both. I say go for it!

I also love the look of the long tables, and agree with @CP that conversations are easier than with the round tables. We are going to be using, 8-9 long tables, which can seat 8 or 10 people and 2 round tables, which seats 8. I say yes to the long tables!
