Long Island Catholic Churches, with no membership requirement?

Alani, on February 21, 2017 at 1:03 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

Hello!

I am a practicing Catholic, born and raised on LI, but moved out of state for graduate school, but I am still a Long Islander, I promise! I have a special connection with aspecific church, having gone to the now closed parish school. I called the church and they said I cannot get married there because I am not a member. I am taken aback! I had my first communion there and the church has a lot of sentimental meaning to me. I always said I wanted to marry there. Furthermore, the Diocese has no list of churches that do not require membership.

Anyone have suggestions for churches on LI that do not require membership? Preferably, in Nassau county. Also, does anyone have experience doing pre-cana in a long distance relationship? I really want a Catholic ceremony, but the talks I have had so far with Diocese workers, it seemed as if they were not very interested in making it work for my LDR.

Thanks!

Try Our lady of peace in Lynbrook- they were very lax in rules. My daughter was baptized there (we aren't members, we just paid a fee) and we were not married in a church.

I will add that it's not one of the "prettier" churches if that matters to you.

I know every Diocese is different. Many Catholics want to get married in the "pretty" parishes so my diocese made a rule that you had to be a member or have a strong connection (taking your sacraments there counts) to the church. If you still have any connections at the parish try to talk to them. Good luck in your hunt!

I can't help with the church issue, but H and I did pre-cana while we were still long distance. In my diocese, the only pre-cana requirements were two, day-long workshops. So one Saturday and one Sunday last spring, H came up for the day so that we could attend the workshops. But every diocese has different requirements. What do you guys need to do for pre-cana?

Thank you Powers2! I will look into that one! The pretty marries a bit...but it is only one factor.

Thanks, YouCanCallMeDot. When I spoke with the church, which is where I had my first communion, they said membership is what counts. They said they would speak to the deacon, but being that I don't live on LI anymore, I am not counting on the wiggle room!

Why not register at the church you grew up in?

You can easily become a member of the church you live near. It's free. Just have to sign up..

Thanks, CMC for sharing. That is what the San Francisco diocese said (FH home) as well as my current diocese...but they said I need to clear it with the diocese where are marrying. I don't know why this is suddenly becoming an issue.

@nona and @AugustBride I moved around a lot as a kid, but my mom was definitely a member in the 90s of St. Joseph's in Garden City. I am not sure if since my mom no longer goes there if I would be eligible. I currently am a member of the church on my campus in Tennessee but I do not want to marry in this state because of a lack of family connection.

Update: St. Joseph's of Garden City does not havey family currently registered. This is pretty sad.

The same thing happened to me. When I returned from grad school, I moved from my childhood home to the next town over and therefore was not zoned for my old parish school (where I attended for 8 years and was an altar server) and therefore could not become an official member! I had always dreamed of getting married there & was quite upset that I was dismissed so quickly. I'm sure there was a way to go around this, however at that point, I didn't want to get married by that priest. I ended up using the parish I was zoned for, Whitestone Queens (close to Nassau) and it was a wonderful and stress-free experience. I was able to book my date before becoming an official member.

But as an adult, you can register.

“There was a wedding at Cana and Jesus was there.”

Engaged couples planning to be married at St. Joseph Catholic Curch should make contact with one of the priests at least SIX MONTHS in advance. Definite plans for this date should not be made until such contact has been made.

    Times marriages are celebrated:

    Fridays: 5:00PM

    Saturdays: 11:00AM & 3:00PM

    Sundays: 3:45PM.

    Contact:

    Rectory (516) 747-3535

Thanks very much Nona. I just spoke with them and despite having been baptized there and my mother being a financially contributing member into the late 90s they said no and told me to use a different church. I do not live on long Island any more and they just told me I cannot be a member unless I lived in the church's jurisdiction. I never imagined it would be so complicated.

Oh, ok, when you said you were a Long Islander, I misunderstood.

Try this place, a friend told me they are very welcoming http://www.stjohnthebaptistchurch.org/sacraments/matrimony
