Locking a cardbox?

Cait, on September 13, 2019 at 5:09 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 12
Hey ladies!
I purchased the IKEA Socker greenhouse to use as our cardbox. It’s a lot bigger then expected but it was only $20 and I can use it for a greenhouse after the wedding! (Double purpose and I’m loving it!) I have seen a few different people mentioning they are locking their cardbox for their wedding. Do you think this is necessary? A family friend had their cards stolen so it’s on the top of my mind.

Im a bit conflicted on how to go about decorating it. Since it is a greenhouse it isn’t that stable and can only be picked up from the bottom safely. I am thinking about hot gluing the base to the sides, maybe adding some cute river rocks and artificial flowers to the bottom, having someone with much better hand writing then me to write either our names, “cards” or “ thank you” on it .

Just don’t know if I should add a lock or a ribbon. Or something to protect it a little more.

We are going to be at a golf club that’s a bit in the middle of no where so I’m hoping that would deter outsiders/ crashers (huge fear of mine!). I just don’t want to be too tacky.

Sorry for the long post! I included a photo from the internet to show you what I plan on using!

Thanks in advance!!

I think it’s important that it locks. I obviously trust my guests and am not worried about them, but there will be venue staff, catering staff, and bartending staff there working the wedding. I don’t know these people and would rather be safe than sorry

Locking card boxes are very common. No one will think twice about it. I also love the idea of the rocks and flowers at the bottom! That was my first thought when you said it was too large!

I'm making our card box and I'm adding a lock. I think it's fairly standard now.

I have a cage and I am weaving ribbon strategically at the base as well as around the top where the cage opens. It will be knotted securely so that stealing anything will require taking the entire thing or putting in way too much effort. It'll be on it's own table near our sweetheart table front and center at the wedding reception. The only concern at that point is the cocktail hour and I'll have family checking.

I had a card board card box. My husband felt even if it was locked that doesn't defer someone from taking the whole thing. So what we did was we had the contents of the card box transferred into a purse or bag that was watched by a relative the entire night.

I think it’s important that it locks, but looking at your box, I’m not sure how/if you could add one.

We all want to trust our guests, but we can't account for everyone in the venue. For the box pictured above I might find an antique looking lock so it looks more decorative but still functions. You could place greenery around it to add to the greenhouse look as well. My FW was adamant we have a lock after going to a wedding where the cards were stolen by a guest. I guess you never know what people are capable of.

My mom was obsessing over locking said card box and putting it away in the safe in my venue's office. She ended up getting me a chest that locks for my bridal shower and she decorated it but she did say I can change it however I wanted since she hijacked my card box idea (I wanted a tree stump FH was gonna make). So I had FH sand it down and I stained it the same color as my other wood signs I'll have around. Now I suppose it's important because how can I trust their employees or every single SO of people we haven't really met yet ya know.

Hey ladies! Thank you so much for your suggestions. I think I am just going to hot glue the majority of mobile parts. In the picture that I showed it has a chain but in reality it doesn’t. So what I’m planning on doing is adding a short chain on one and so can only be opened to a certain degree and then hot glue the other side so I can’t be fully opened and only insert cards. Appreciate the thoughts because I did not even consider outside people besides our guests. I’ll let you know how it goes

    Don’t Hot Glue it‼️

I was moving ours after we brought it back 🏠 and it came apart.

I was able to pull most of the “Hot” Glue off while DH was adding holes to put Screws in it.

    Congratulations and 🍀‼️

Honestly I didn't think about a locking cardbox until this post. I have one of those pumpkins and I carved a slot in it so for someone to steal our cards they have to steal the entire pumpkin. Ideally I will have all staffed people on the opposite end of my venue but I don't know if a lot would deter someone from stealing to be honest. Now with yours being much larger that would be hard to conceal so maybe lock it but idk. My wedding is destination for everyone and we are all staying in the same house so if anyone from the guest list stole it we would know Wish i was of more help but I do agree with someone else post about looking for an antique like lock.

My fiance's father offered to make our card box for us because he works in construction and is really good at building things. We requested he put a lock on it because we don't have a registry, we are simply asking for donations to our honeymoon, and although we know everyone there, we aren't risking anything coming up missing
