So I know this might not be the place to post about this but you girls are great and I need advice (comfort) haha. I'm recently engaged and my fiance and I are relocating to where I am from and my family currently lives. We are moving in together a year before our wedding. I have no problem with this and am SO excited for a new adventure. My parents approve. However, my extended family has traditional values and wouldn't approve. Clearly I can't hide this from them bc we are living in the same town. How can I introduce this idea and not offend or upset anyone. I don't want to fight with my family during this special time. Thanks!

My family was surprised we didn't move in together sooner, but FH was worried mostly about what his father would say. We moved in together several months before we got engaged and he had a long talk about it with his mom before he decided he was ready to move in together. She basically told him he couldn't worry about what his dad would think or say and that he should do whatever was right for us as a couple. His dad wasn't thrilled (and is less thrilled that we won't be getting married in the Catholic church), but he's accepted it. Ultimately, it's your relationship and you get to decide what's best. Explain to them why it's the right decision for you guys and they should be fine. Smiley smile

My FH and I moved in together before we were engaged. I figured someone would have an issue with it (I assumed his family as I am older than him and he was moving to my town and away from them). To my surprise they didn't. When we discussed it with them they said that we needed to do what was right for us and if moving in together is what is going to work-then that's what we need to do. Understandably this does not happen with all families. If his family takes issue-I'm assuming you're both adults. I would likely respond (as PP) "I'm sorry you feel that way but this is what works for us" and rinse and repeat. I wish you the best!!

I know you don't want to "hide" it from them, but I don't think this requires a big announcement to your extended family. If it comes up, kindly explain that you are both adults who made the best decision for your personal situation. If they want to judge, let them. They're the ones who will look bizarre for butting into other people's personal business.

I was basically living with FH before my lease was up at the apartment I was in. My mom wasn't totally on board with it at the time and felt it was too soon, but I reminded her that it really wasn't up to her. I'm an adult and she doesn't pay any of my bills.

When I moved in with FH, my aunt told me I couldn't move in with him, and then went on to say that he would never marry me and that him and his family were only using me (this came out of nowhere. She doesn't know anything about him or his family). I ignored her comments and did what I wanted because I'm an adult. Now we are getting married and she still has negative things to say about our relationship. You just have to live your life and do what's best for you and your FH. If anyone has an issue with it, it's their problem.
