Live Painter

Hey all!

While I have not put any deposits down yet as I am researching vendors first, has anyone decided to push back their wedding to save up for things they really want? My date right now is December 4th, 2021, if I pushed it back it would make my new date December 3rd, 2022. With Covid, that might be a good idea anyways. I personally have not known anyone with a two year long engagement as I live in Utah where everyone gets married in like 6 months tops... how will that change my planning?
I would like to have a live painter and I could pay for it if my wedding was two years away instead of one. Has anyone thought of having one? I don’t want to cut out something that I might regret not doing. The one I found is not a bad price considering it is inclusive of all of her travel fees, meals, hotel, etc and labor for the painting. The cost is $4,000 and definitely would be most expensive part of my entire wedding. I have extensively researched my area, and so far, for the experience and the results, she is (again, so far) my best option.
For reference, my fiancé and I have mutually decided we want to get married and I have reached out to get an idea of what I would want. But, we are waiting for my braces to come off and for the ring to come back in stock so he can ask for my dad’s blessing as well give me the special surprise proposal I want. Because of this, I don’t know if or how much my dad would be willing to contribute. He knows I’m researching, he just doesn’t want to commit to anything until it’s “official”, so I am planning on paying it ourselves.
Also to those that have seen my previous discussions, I am considering a wedding painter now that I have cut my guest list quite a bit, however, with the extra year, I could have a bit more people.
Thank you!!

This is a link to the painters website if you feel inclined to see her work. Wedding painters typically provide entertainment for the guests and I have the option to choose what they paint. The most popular thing that they paint is the first dance. The reason why they can charge a lot of money is because they finish it by the end of your wedding and gift the painting to you. However, compared to some painters I know, the price is pretty fair for a painting of that size and the crunch time. They start usually an hour before the reception if they paint the first dance or two to three hours before the ceremony if they paint the first kiss as a married couple. Sometimes, they allow guests to paint a stroke as well, however, I am not 100% sure if this one allows that. For an extra fee, she can take the piece home and do more detail work. And also do thank you cards with the painting on it. I am a big fan of artwork, and I feel like this would be a good investment if I did have the money for it. The price I mentioned above included the labor, her flight, hotel, rental car, all meals, supplies, and the painting itself.

2 year engagements are fairly common outside LDS areas. Delays make sense due to covid. I have never heard of such a painter arrangement, $1000 an hour. In the end , some prioritize videotaping, or long days of photos, or travel to a destination. If this is what both of you want, and you are willing to pay for it, go ahead.

Most of the painters I know have charged at least a couple grand just for one commissioned painting. I think her pricing is fairly reasonable because it includes her travel and things like that. Yes! I think that we need to decide if this a non-negotiable item for us. 🥰

There have been a few brides on here who had (or are planning to have) live painters at their weddings. We contemplated it, but I tend to be incredibly sensitive to smells and (even odorless) fumes- both trigger migraines. I didn’t want to risk that on my wedding day. As far as the price, it seems in-line with the live painters we found. Whether or not you postpone is entirely up to you and your fiancé - is having the painter worth waiting another year to be married? If so, there’s nothing wrong with postponing. And like you said, covid may still be causing restrictions by your current date (though hopefully not!!)

I personally would not have a live painter be the most expensive thing about my wedding. Is a live painter worth pushing your wedding date back? If that's a must have for the BOTH of you then go for it, but I personally don't see the logistics of paying $4000 for a painter.

I’m trying to find one in Vegas or even salt lake but so far I haven’t found one like I said. I have thought about going to the university in my area and asking, I just haven’t done that yet.

Thank you! As of right now, my date is still open but it might not be in a few minutes. I’m not usually sensitive to smells so that is a plus,

I recently learned about live painters on TikTok! They are very cool and it is amazing what they can do in so little time. If you really want one and can afford it, I say go for it! I personally could not afford one and prioritized photo and video above a single painting, but it is definitely something unique that you could treasure forever. Another option if you do get married in a year and cannot afford it is to make sure you have a photo of you and your FH dancing (or whatever you wanted to be painted) and ask an artist to create a painting from the picture after the fact when you can afford it. That way, you would not have to pay all that extra for flight, hotel, food, etc. Just a thought!

Yes! I love wedding painters!!!! I think you should totally do it. My FHs distant cousin was hired for one of his family gatherings. We were all just watching in awe. As guests we really enjoyed it and its a good conversation starter for others that may be single and shy.

It is an interesting concept... I would never do it just because I am far from an artist and wouldn’t appreciate it lol but if this is your guys thing, then it’s neat! I wouldn’t watch it or perceive it as “entertainment” for the guests, as I would rather be socializing with family / friends / watching the bride and groom.

I also moved my July 2021 to July 2022 and now we are able to do things we’ve wanted to. I wanted a live painter and now we get to have one. The one I found is actually 2,400$ and his work is amazing. But he lives in NY. If waiting two years is what you think will work better for you to get what you want go for it!!!! We did although a little sad lol because now we have to wait a little longer. But time flies and soon I’ll have to pick things up where I left off. Best of luck!!

I agree with this. But you know what your priorities/wants are. Also some people are sensitive to paint smells even if you are not. Alot of couples do the first dance during dinner and that could compete with dinner smells and make some guests sick. Something to consider.

Have you tried thebash.com for an artist?

Yeah, I actually just asked if the seller is an issue as I am planning on having an indoor wedding. My first dance will be before dinner actually but she will be painting all throughout the day... I actually haven’t but I will! Thank you.
