Live [irish] Musicians for Cocktail Hour

GalwayGirl, on March 29, 2018 at 11:10 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10

So, FH and I got engaged on a trip he planned for us to Ireland. We both come from fairly Irish families and we fell in love with the country in our time there.

We don't have much concrete planned for our wedding just yet, but the idea just popped into my head that a lovely way to incorporate our engagement and heritage could be to have Irish music playing for some time. I would still want a DJ later on so dancing would be more accessible but something sounds so lovely about having live Irish music played for some portion of the evening - maybe cocktail hour and dinner? I can't think of anything more evocative of our time in Ireland than beautiful music floating through the air while our guests enjoy a bit of craic!

I'm just toying with the idea now so I'm curious what other bride's experiences might have been with this. What kind of prices did you find for live musicians? Would it be weird to only have live music for an hour or two? Would Irish reels grate your nerves as a guest?

(Very open to hearing about ALL experiences with live musicians, not just Irish musicians)

    Following.

We are currently pricing out a Balkan brass band to lead an 8 minute processional from the ceremony to the cocktail hour and then at some point a DJ will take over. I’m not sure sure how long they should play for though and worried an hour might be too much - or worried if they end before the reception starts then people might think cocktail hour is prematurely over...

I have no experience with live musicians but I think live Irish music at cocktail hour would be amazing.

If live musicians are too pricey, consider putting together a playlist of some of your favorite reels and have your DJ play that during cocktail hour.

We just got our first quote. 3300 for one hour! That being said they are The best Balkan brass band in nyc and they would have to travel 90 minutes away.... I hope we can find one a little more affordable

Oh my gosh, that's a lot! I kind of expected a high price like that considering everything that goes into live music. We'd definitely need any musicians that we look into to travel too since we're planning something in a rural area. I hope we both find something a little more affordable!

I kind of love this as an affordable alternative, maybe with some Irish-themed signature cocktails to drive home the vibe?

I like the idea of Irish music. You could look for a smaller group of musicians (2-3 people) who might be in your budget. I do support paying musicians well, though, because so much goes into them becoming accomplished musicians, and the instruments are often pricey.

I am have two live musicians for the ceremony and cocktail hour. Ran me about 800 dollars for that sections. Think it would be lovely if you did that.

    Any update?

Thinking of a similar idea in addition to the ceremony.
