Limited Parking/Shuttle Service

Mari, on March 29, 2015 at 10:42 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

Last night we went and looked at place we loved for the ceremony and reception. Its a private residence, but the owner is letting us use the property for free. The only issue is parking- its very limited- looks like we could fit about 20 cars. So we were thinking about letting some of the older folks and people with small children park at the site and have a shuttle for other guests. Does this seem fair or should we should we just shuttle everyone in?

    I think that seems fair.

Where are you shuttling from? A hotel?

What if a guest doesn't want to stay until the end of the reception, will the shuttle be making multiple trips back and forth?

Most people are local so were thinking of having a meeting area in town for people to meet at with plenty of parking. The out of town people would also have to meet there as well because I'm guessing most of them will be staying in the next town over as it much more affordable for hotels. And yes, we would having making multiple trips Smiley smile

I would say that if you think your guests would be okay with it, then that would be fine.

Personally, I would hate to leave my car somewhere else and shuttle, but that's just me Smiley smile

The property is about 15 minutes out of town---we drove up and down the road last night trying to see if there was an open lot somewhere on that road for folks to park, but it is very heavily wooded and all private property Smiley sad there is an empty lot in town that would work, and it is a very small and tight community so the cars would be safe there.

I hate shuttles and want to be able to leave when I want to. Is there another option for people like me?

@ EricaTX--We were thinking about either renting one large shuttle or two smaller one that would be running more often then as the party winds down got one smaller shuttle to be sure people would be able to leave easily when they wanted too. Unfortunately, there is no where to parking within walking distance.

@Future- Why? We would have clear meeting spot for the shuttle in the invite with one or maybe two shuttles running to get guests back and forth. These are just the ideas we came up with last night. so we are totally open to suggestions to make it easier for the guests! Smiley smile

Let's say I want to leave after dinner, I hop on the shuttle and it drives away. 2 minutes later, someone else is waiting to leave. They have to wait there for what, 30 minutes (?) if it is 15 minutes to town (so there and back). I feel like there will be a lot of people waiting around to leave.

Thats why I was thinking about having two shuttles....and the people who would be leaving early (older folks and people with small children) would be able to park at the site. Maybe have set shuttle times posted so folks new when it was coming and going?

Just a thought - this could totally depend on your area but when I looked at shuttles they were $700 for 3 hours. And that's just for one shuttle

I haven't looked into cost yet-- but I have worked with them (shuttle services) in the past and know the rates around here are reasonable.

In the end, it's what you and your FH thinks will be right. Everything will work out in the end Smiley smile

I was at a wedding that was in a backyard but off a very busy street. They had 2 shuttles to and from an elementary school parking lot that was about a mile and a half away. When it started, they both just filled up and dropped people off. Then during the party I think each one stayed at each site in case someone wanted to leave early or arrived late. No idea how much something like this cost them, but it worked out fine for us as guests.

Most weddings I have been to have shuttles and it has worked out fine. Guests won't be able to leave the second they want to - not a big deal. They can wait for the next shuttle. It's the same situation in cities when you wait for trains, subways, and buses to go somewhere.

Hmm there is a school that is a couple minutes closer with a large lot--I'll have to see if their lot would be available too! It would save a little on shuttle times

I'll just say this; at nearly every wedding we have problems waiting for shuttles to arrive and leave. Shuttles can only be as reliable as the last guest who forgot her lipstick. Everyone waits.
