Limited open bar

Marina, on June 20, 2017 at 2:15 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

I have been going back and forth in my head about having a beer and wine bar vs open bar. I was wondering if any of you have done a limited bar e.g. wine, beer, vodka, whiskey, rum. But only one brand of each hard alcohol? I have always wanted a full open bar, is that still considered one? (My mother is trying to make me do a cash bar and I refuse)

I think having one brand of each liquor qualifies as open bar and is probably common, even. Go for it!

You can absolutely choose one brand of liquor.

    And good girl!

eta: I wouldn't even go so far as to call it "limited."

My MIL also wants us to do cash bar (actually, drink tickets, which I think is even worse... like here I am limiting you to 2 drinks...). I think beer and wine is great, but if you can do full open bar, go for it! I don't really see the point of offering some hard liquors and not all? Are you buying your own alcohol? I definitely think including a few options for hard alcohol is great!

ETA: when I say some hard liquors, i mean types (such as gin, etc). I definitely think one brand of each is totally fair and classifies as open bar.

I think that sounds reasonable. I agree with @Nonna that I don't even think I would consider it limited.

I would definitely have more wine and beer options, but one brand of each hard liquor is totally fine!

I think this is all up to what you want! I am having wine and beer (variety) and two signature cocktails and the guests can get whatever all night (or until we run out, lol). Look at your budget and mess around with what you can get!

I second @Kate's recommendation. We're using that guide for a bar with those 5 basic alcohols, beer, wine, and a few signature cocktails. We are having 1 brand of each liquor and at least 2 types of beer and at least 1 red and 1 white wine. Our bartender provides things like vermouth and bitters, otherwise we wouldn't have had those, sorry martini drinkers.
