Lights & Tulle: a different way

Iris, on January 19, 2013 at 11:29 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 17

Ok I've been going nuts looking at all kinds of ways to do tulle & lights. The typical star shape, going from all 4 ends of room to middle, that's not working. Our venue has a stage in front that's lovely & I want to decorate it separate from the ceiling lights. And the back of the room, no hooks. So instead it's more of an "X", going from only 2 sides of the room to the middle. At first I wanted to cover the whole ceiling, so I thought ok have tulle & lights straight across from side to side, in a line. But FH doesnt like that, plus the draping would cover the stage, which I dont want. FH wants to stick to the "X" shape, but I think if we use too much tulle, it'll look weird b/c only sections of the ceiling will be covered.

So now I'm bouncing this idea. Still using tulle, Cutting it into squares, using grey/silver & purple respectively to lights color, tying them on. It's like tulle garland. It'll even out how much ceiling is covered. I think it's fun & lovely. Opinions?

P.S. if anyone is confused on what I'm trying to say, let me know & I'll re-phrase.

I was having the same issue at my venue. I think this is an awesome idea! So you are tying the tulle right under the lights, right?

That's what it looks like, to get the tulle to be lit. Or maybe do bigger squares that are fluffier, on the strands in between lights, that way it still lights up. I want to do LED white icicles, that'll give that fairytale feel, & regular string lights of LED purple

That is a great idea! I have been struggling with trying to get the ceiling decorated at my venue and just gave up. But you just made the light bulb go on in my head. I think it's great and you should go for it. I am also doing fairy tale...very fitting for this design.

Well my theme is maquerade, but I'm trying to make it look more elegant masque, not kooky jugglers & fire style lol.

My place has hooks on 2 sides of these columns, that's the only way we can do it. Does your venue have hooks? Do they allow to use tape or anything?

Yes, they do. I wonder how long it would take to set that up. Columns are a good idea too, just in case I can't get it

That's what I'm thinking, is that it's not common to do for weddings. The more common thing is like you said, lights & tulle laying over or under it.

This is cheaper to afford, & I thought not only is it a fun project but it'll give flavor to the place without having to overdue-covering up the ceiling. It's not like the ceiling is bad either...

And you will get to hear your guest talk about how different that idea is, and how on earth did you come up with it?

Beautiful idea and a lot of work, I was thinking that if you want more tulle around the light, perhaps cutting a hole in a fairly big square of tulle, push it over the lightbulb, and tie it around the back with your ribbons in the colors you like, but, longer in lengths to add more drama, and it will have a flowing, romantic look. Good Luck.x
