Letting the dj play to the crowd?

Samantha, on August 1, 2019 at 11:58 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 12

Are any of you giving your DJ free reign for music? We obviously have our specific songs picked for 1st dance, mom + son dance etc. but besides the list I've given him for those songs and a few others I'd love to hear, I kinda just want to say "Play to the crowd". I told him we don't want rap, metal and so on but some people think that seems to be a slippery slope. What are you all doing?

Yes, this is basically what we're doing. Your DJ is a professional, which is why you hired him, right? If you're not sure about his experience level, or his ability to keep the crowd happy, you should sit down and talk with him about this.

Our DJ has been doing this for about 12 years, and we've seen him in action, at a fundraising event, so we were able to judge how well he worked with the crowd, and picked the music to keep things rocking. So, if you have an opportunity to see your DJ in action before the wedding, I would highly recommend taking that opportunity. But I would say that most wedding DJs know what to do, have that kind of experience, and as part of the service, perform MC duties as well as playing music. That's part of their job, to know what music to play when, and to keep the crowd happy. They don't want an empty dance floor any more than you do.

We are also letting him play to the crowd. Of course I added some of our favorite songs, and the special songs, and there are a few songs on the no play list (I hate cant fight this feeling) & discussed our taste. However, we hired a DJ for a reason, they are the experts - so we are going to trust their expertise.

We picked the songs for our events like the cake cutting and dances, but otherwise, we told our DJ what kind of music we like and he'll take it from there. I'm assuming it'll be mostly top 40 and some typical wedding songs.

Yea I gave him a list of songs requested by our guests and told him artists I didn't want played but other than that I just let him have free reign too.

We did! Figured he’s a professional and we hired him for a reason. Turned out great.

Yes. I personally can’t imagine doing anything it any other way. We hired him for his expertise. I told him what we usually like to listen to on our own, and a couple song ideas we think are fun, but, that was basically the extent of my guidance. He was awesome and everything was perfect.

We will be having some input besides the specific dance & cake songs. Our dj told us to add 20 must play songs to our list. So they will fit them in accordingly. I like that because my favorite music (boybands) isn’t really played at a lot of weddings.

We are having ours play to the crowd. We have used him before and he’s always great at working the crowd.

We're basically doing the same. We picked our special songs and made a list of must haves and do not plays and we're leaving the rest up to him.

I literally did the same thing and don’t regret it! However, I didn’t have a dancing crowd so it didn’t matter haha A small handful danced and I enjoyed the music our DJ played! I say if you don’t really care it’s one less thing to stress about (and choosing a bunch of songs like that would stress me lol)

I did the same and we danced all night. Only complaint from one of my friends when yet another awesome song came on..."Oh my god, play a sucky song so I can go eat cake!" LOL

That's exactly what we did. We gave him our needs (specific moments), our "must play" list, our "hey if you can, please do" list, and our "we will cut you if you play it" list (lol). Outside of that, we just told him to read the room. That's his job, that's what we hired him for, and with his background as a former nightclub dj, we knew he was GOOD at it. Based on the lists we gave, he was able to pinpoint our exact taste, and mix it up without it feeling like a playlist. Any good DJ should be able to do that for you - so let them do their job!
