Letting a dress out

Danielle, on September 27, 2019 at 12:23 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4

I picked up my wedding dress today but am a little concerned on the fit. The dress shop said they weren’t & I was so excited that I went with it. Does anyone have experience letting a dress out??

I probably need another inch to comfortably close it at the top & I don’t have any extra weight to lose in that area. Could probably use an extra half inch to an inch to be relaxed in the fit. There does seem to be a decent seam allowance but I also don’t really have a frame of reference to judge..

They said the next size up would be too big but as I’m thinking at home now, wondering if anyone else had had this experience? Going to take it to an alterations shop ASAP but would love to hear words of comfort!!

Wedding gowns don’t fit quite the same as regular clothing. Their material, structure and embellishments can make them sometimes feel like they’re not fitting right, even when they are. I would try the dress on again with the undergarments you’re going to wear for the wedding. Try moving around in it, sitting, bending and dancing. If you feel like you can’t breathe, you probably should have it let out. Most dresses are made with wiggle room and can easily be let out that inch you need. This happens a lot and your seamstress will be able to tell you what should be done to get the perfect fit.

I had the the top of my dress let out about an inch and the seamstress made it fit perfectly! Don’t worry 😊

It's really early to worry too much about your alterations, especially if the dress currently fits, but just feels a little tight, and clearly has some seam allowance. You have almost 10 months till your wedding, so even being super generous with timing, alterations don't need to start for another 6-7 months. In that time, your weight might naturally fluctuate a little. Also, most wedding gowns stretch a little the more they are tried on/worn. I'd plan on trying it on every 4-6 weeks between now and spring. That will give you an idea of how it's fitting. Then I'd schedule your first alterations appointment about 3 months before the wedding, depending on how it fits at that time. Good luck! Smiley heart

You've got to take it to someone like a seamstress to really know because wedding dresses are such different items of clothing compared to like a normal casual dress you wear out to dinner. if you let it out in some parts, it may not look right in others, etc.
