Letting a dress out?

Hey all! I found my dream dress at a salon. I also saw a consignment store was selling the exact same dress, half the price, never worn or altered. The one at consignment store is a littttle too tight in the hips. The store owner it could be let out no problem, but I'm not sure if I trust her. The lining is the part that is tight.. and it has about half an inch of seam overlay on either side.

Anyone have any experience letting a dress out? Cost of alterations, how "doable" it is?

I am hoping to bring a seamstress to look at it, but thought I'd ask around here first.

Look under vendors and find a seamstress near you. Read the reviews and go from there. If you don't "see" it then I'm sure you'll have options.

If it's never been altered, an experienced seamstress should be able to let it out up to 2 sizes.

I think it depends on how much it needs to be let out. We had to let out my nieces bridesmaids dress(high school stress weight) and it was fine although more expensive than taking it in

Check with the bridal salon you found it at. They should be able to tell you.

Possibly, if you find the right seamstress. You could also see about a corset back if it is only slightly tight

I had my gown let out 1/2" on either side at the waist (where it was just a bit too tight) and it worked out perfectly! Just be sure you find a skilled seamstress and you should be fine.

You can definitely have that 1/2" on each side let out. If it's only a little tight, that extra inch or so should be plenty. You will need a good seamstress. Taking out the seam on lining without damaging anything is trickier than it looks.
