Let's hear your proposal stories!!

MrsLaurenET, on August 6, 2015 at 6:12 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 40

I want to hear everyone's proposal stories! Was it elaborate and public, or was it low key and private! Did your FH/FW propose, or did you? There's so many ways to do it!

I'll start!

My FH and I were on a long weekend at the cape. We decided to take a walk around town before dinner. We stopped at a small park along the way. On our way out, I was walking in front and he tapped me on the shoulder. When I turned around he was down on one knee! And I was soooo shocked my jaw dropped and I totally drooled! Haha! Extremely embarrassing at the time but now I think it's hilarious. People can't believe I tell that part but we are goofballs so it fits us well Smiley smile

Ready.. go!!

I love your story! How sweet!!

My FH proposed on our 1 year anniversary. We both work overnights and when we got home he told me to go into the bedroom and get a show ready to watch while he got some drinks ready. A few minutes later he walked in with our cat dressed up as a bride and our dog dressed up as a groom. He said his perfect sweet little speech and then popped the question. BUT! He didn't give me a ring at that second. He had put it on our dogs collar and the dog had run out of the room hahah.

FH and I went to New York City as an anniversary get away (our anniversary was a few days prior). First we went to see the Phantom of the Opera, where he surprised me with front row tickets! After the show we went to our hotel to get ready for dinner. We went to this French restaurant called BoBo. We ordered dessert and there was a box on my cake. FH got down on one knee in the restaurant and asked me to be his wife.

Well, it was in December pretty close to Christmas. We went to IHOP for some breakfast (delicious) and then she took me to see the nutcracker ballet. We had our own little private corner. After that, we walked around center city and looked at all the Christmas lights. It's beautiful that time of year. Then, around dinner time, we picked up my fav dinner from Luke's Lobster (half a lobster roll, shrimp roll and crab roll. Lobster Mac n cheese, clam chowder, root beer, some chips and a pickle) and I think we got dessert...I think. Anyway, we came home and she made me wait in the car lol. Once she let me in the house, there were rose pedals going up the stairs into our bedroom all the way to our bed. She also lit a bunch of candles and our favorite romantic music was playing. We had a lil picnic on the bed. Funny part is, she had to postpone the proposal for a quick food nap xD LOL anyway, she woke up and then woke me up because she realized that our song came on. Then, she handed me this Christmas wrapped box she'd been hiding. I unwrapped it and there was this old box. When I opened it, there was fake snow covering up some things. She'd put an ornament that she'd made for me inside, love quotes from all of our favorite stories, and she wrote me a love letter. Needless to say, by that point I was bawling. Then I felt around the bottom of the box and all covered in snow was this small gift wrapped box. I unwrapped that and froze because I knew it was a ring box. She opened it and asked me to marry her. I cried some more, said yes and gave her the biggest kiss Smiley smile So that's our story. ETA: btw, she had recorded the whole thing and showed me afterwards. Pic below

FH and I just bought a house. Well, he bought it. We had been looking and when we found The House, we put in the offer and THEN our Mortgage guy realized we weren't married. Even though he'd run our numbers and we pointed out several times we weren't married, he just then realized we weren't and the VA apparently won't let you get a joint mortgage if your not married. So after all the back and forth and all that we finally got our house!

Jul 4th we had our house warming party and we had a lot of fun!! We had gotten some fire works to shoot off later that night, and by that time pretty much everybody had left. The only ones there, besides the kids, was one of my eldest's friends and my BiL. I was the one lighting the fire works and I announced it was the last one... after I lit it, FH tries to pull me away, and I told him I wanted to watch the fireworks... so he put is arm around me and sighed. Then he turned to me, got down on one knee and asked! I was so surprised, even though we've been together for 4 years and just bought a house, I was surprised! I guess the first words out of my mouth were "Are you Shitting me?!?!" LOL

Edit to add pic of our house! LOL

A few years ago I had bought FH a terrarium from a local shop in Brooklyn for Valentine's Day. Since then we've gotten a few DIY kits from them and I had always wanted to do their private workshop. At the private workshop you get to come up with your own terrarium design and they will make you custom figures of your choice.

On our fifth dating anniversary in October, he told me part of my gift was this private workshop. Every time we spoke about what design we should do, he kept saying in a cute and an insistent way we should have a treasure chest in it. Needless to say I kind of figured out what his plan might be well over a month before the class in December. The week before the class we were joking around and it ended up coming out that I suspected he was going to propose at the class. He did everything he could to successfully throw me off the trail. Fast forward a week to the private workshop. It was me, FH, instructor, shop worker and customer in the shop and we were putting down moss. The instructor pulls out the custom figures we asked them to make and I look at them confused because it was not what FH and I discussed. I turn around to question it and he is on one knee. Then he said "you were right, will you marry me?". He had the ring in one of the little plastic treasure boxes. I ended up being totally surprised. The terrarium now sits on our table.

My FH's birthday is also Valentine's Day, so I planned a trip for us to go to Jacksonville to celebrate. I asked him what he wanted to do while we were there for his birthday and he kept saying I don't know, whatever you want to do, etc. This went on for a couple of weeks. The day we were getting ready to leave, I was vacuuming the house before we got on the road (because I'm OCD and like a clean house when I get back from out of town). As I'm vacuuming my daughters room, he comes in and asks me what we are doing in Jacksonville for the weekend. Of course I look at him like he's crazy. He then says well there is one thing I want to do and that's ask you to be my wife and he gets down on one knee. I'm still holding on to the vacuum mind you and apparently I had a crazy look on my face because he asked why are you looking like that. I don't think I said anything. But he did officially ask me to marry him and I said yes. I don't think I finished vacuuming the room, but I do know that I made him wash the dishes before we left because I didn't want to get my hands wet with my new ring.

How cute Lauren, that totally sounds like something I would do too!

Our engagement came up because we'd been together nearly 10 years, I'd lost my dad and two of our beloved fur-babies suddenly in the prior year, and our close friends had had a baby recently. I decided to broach the subject because I thought it might be time to make our relationship more permanent (and legal), so we discussed the possibility of going from bf/gf to betrothed as the next logical step. After some discussion and much thought and convo, he agreed that it made sense, and we'd maybe start looking at rings or something soon.

Fast forward a couple weeks or so to our 10 year dating anniversary, and he decided to "do it the right way" by getting a ring himself and surprising me with a proposal. Only he carried the ring around all day (while we went to the zoo and out to dinner) and never found a good moment to pop the question (so he says). So around about midnight, as we were watching TV in the living room, he comes back into the room from the kitchen and (while standing and I'm sitting) he hands me a ring. I took it and said thanks and continued watching our program....

See, he handed it to me so casually that I just assumed he had found one of my rings lying around and didn't want me to lose it, so was basically like "here" with it. It took me several seconds before I realized that I didn't recognize the ring, so it wasn't mine, and then I jumped to the conclusion that it was an anniversary gift! (It was a very simple, blue diamond fashion ring, so didn't look at all like an engagement ring.) Blue diamonds were fairly new at the time and it was dark in the room, so I said, "Oh wow, thanks! What is this, a sapphire...?"

It wasn't until he sat sideways next to me on the couch (with his right knee kinda toward the ground) and told me it was a blue diamond, before going into his speech, that I figured out what was happening! I remember getting pretty flushed, but have no clue now what he said at the time.

It's such a sweet, silly story to me now, and I'm glad he decided to be traditional and do the whole proposal thing. (And I'm SO glad he didn't do it at the zoo or restaurant!!) The way we were talking about it before, it was going to be more like a mutual agreement, so I'm glad there was a little more romance to it than that!

ETA: the proposal ring. He hadn't sized it unfortunately, but I thought it was so creative to get an unconventionally-colored, yet traditional stone!

FH had gotten back from a week in Vegas for work. I was working on a paper for a class, and he kept pushing me to finish it. After I procrastinated for a bit I finished and told him I was going to take a nap because I hadn't slept well while he was gone. Instead he convinced me to go get a movie and something to drink with him. As we were pulling back up to the house, he got out of the car and came around to my door opened it reached in and turned the radio on. He had our song playing and the display read Will you marry me? He got down on one knee ( in the snow) and asked me to marry him. I said yes and he put my great great aunts ring on my finger. Then he told me that my family and his were at my parents house waiting for us to celebrate. Turns out that was why he was being so pushy about me finishing my paper. It was perfect because he is such a car guy that it incorporated some of him, and having our family to celebrate really made me happy.

Wish we had pics but it was just us in our home which was kind of special!

So it was my 29th birthday. Instead of going out to eat, I just wanted to order in pizza and wings when I got off work, us Western NYers love our pizza and wings!

So I get home and he looks all cute and dressed up(nice button down shirt, hair styled, jeans)when we usually are bums at home hahaha. One of my presents is a huuuuge box. I'm thinking, "what the hell is that?" So we eat, I can tell he's like, nervous or something is up. So I start opening gifts and get to the big box. Its a smaller box, then a smaller box, then I get to a jewelry box! .now I am like, "holy shit!" in my head!!! I open the box, and its empty.. I look at him next to me, and he is on his knee with the ring, he starts playing "shotgun rider" by Tim McGraw on his phone and then tells me how much he loves me and then proposes!!!! Funny thing with us and country music is I hate it and he lives for it! Hes always trying to get me to like it. But that really has become a special song to me of course Smiley smile I was in such shock I can't even remember all he said but it was super sweet. I love the memories I have of it and how it was just us in our first home. Then came calling all the family and floods of texts from people who knew it was happening that day!

FH and I had been dating for about a year when he proposed. He knew pretty quickly he wanted to marry me; I took some convincing. Fastfoward to the year mark, I had become confident as well that I wanted to marry him too. So we set a budget for rings. I've never wanted anything flashy, and I'm pretty darn frugal. So I had my eye on a bridal set at Zales that was $599. About, two weeks before he proposed they had a sale $200 off purchases over $600. We jumped on it and got all three rings for $650. I love a good deal. So, I knew the proposal was coming. He let me wear the ring around the house for a few days, but then took it back. We left for a camping trip with my best friend and her family. We all went down to the beach for sunset. Fh and I were talking about the fact that we were 1 day away from a year together. I made the comment, "it'll be 365 days tomorrow." He said, "No, tomorrow will be 366 days together. Today is 365, So here at sunset of our 365th day together....." At this point I screamed at my best friend to take some pictures and don't remember another word he said. I couldn't even say yes, I was crying so hard. I muttered a "mmhmm," through my tears. Through all that, we almost missed the sunset entirely and it still came as a surprise in the end.

FH and I always go for very long bike rides through other towns around us. We have a trail that goes on for miles and miles right near our house that we love to ride on. I have a little saddle bag on my bike that I keep my phone and keys in when we go for a ride. When we stopped for a water break, I reached in for my phone and found the ring box! I pulled it out, turned around, and he was on one knee! It was the perfect proposal while doing something we love to do together.

ME: "I'm 23 years old, I should at least be engaged by now. Tick tock."

.....a few hours later, laying in bed after a nap...FH: "Let's go get you a ring."

We went to the jewelry store and he let me pick out any ring I wanted. Seven years later, here we are. We're romantic as fuck!

Christmastime in NYC is my favorite thing in the whole world. FH and I went there our first Christmas together, and I had been a little sad that we weren't going to make it last year. We were living in Connecticut, and going back to Ohio to spend Christmas with my family later that week. FH called early that afternoon and told me that he was getting off work early so that we could take the train to NYC and I could at least see the tree and walk around the city for awhile. I was pretty excited, but didn't think anything of it. I met him at his work, we went to the train station and got to the city around 6pm. We walked around, and then of course made our way to the tree at Rockefeller since it's my favorite thing there. We took some pictures, and then I was looking at something and turned around and he was down on one knee in front of everyone right in front of the tree. It was perfect, and basically my dream proposal.

    So cute!!!

I was down for H's graduation with my family in NC where I've since moved from but where we met. We were staying with my best friend and her boyfriend, and we had plans to all go out to breakfast. When I got out of my shower the guys were gone and my friend was helping me get dressed so I knew something was up as we usually wear sweats. She then gave me a note and then it was a bit of a journey throughout the town of important places to us like our first meeting, date, kiss, etc.. He proposed in a beautiful garden on our campus in front of my friends and family.

My FH has an 8 year old son and one night we were hanging out at our house playing board games (Monopoly to be exact) when his son started telling me about a school project that he had where he had to interview people in his family and asked if he could interview me. I told him of course and he proceeded to pull out notecards with questions on it. Most of them very normal and he was recording all the answers (favorite color, vacation spot, etc) he then got to the last questions which were "Do you love my daddy?" & "Do you want to be my step-mom?" which is when my FH came out and got on one knee with the ring! I was in complete shock and kept repeated "Really?!" Definitely a perfect beginning to our story.

No proposal for me at all! Which is always slightly funny to me when people ask "how did he propose" and I say he didn't and they look all sad for me, but it completely doesn't bother me. We were on vacation visiting his family and said a couple of times how nice it would be to get married in his parents backyard, then we chatted a few times about how because of his job we could only really do it in this August/September - then one evening it was just the two of us and I turned round to him and said "so, shall we get married next August?", he replied with "yeah, seems like the best idea" and a few days later we went and picked out a ring. Totally unromantic, but practical, and completely us!

This was what FH put on our website... We were at her parents house after just having come in from taking her nephews and siblings to the circus. I was so nervous and didn't know how to transition to asking her. Then out of nowhere her mother gives all of the kids in the house some ring pops... I promise that wasn't planned, but this provided me with the perfect segue for me to ask the most beautiful woman in the world to be my wife. Once I started to speak, though we were in a house full of people, it was as if it was just her and I. In her parents kitchen, I got down on one knee and asked my best friend to marry me. Of course she said yes Smiley smile.... It was perfect ! He asked for my parents blessings and my older twin brothers' blessing as well ! Smiley smile I love him. haha

We have an odd story. We got engaged right out high school but knew our parents would kill us, so we only told friends and kept it from our parents (my parents never asked about my ring). We had a fancy meal at a nice restaurant, and since he knew I didn't want to be proposed to in front of people because I'm so socially awkward, he waited until we were outside to get down on one knee in the snow. He didn't realize that we were in front of a giant window of the restaurant and people were freaking out and cheering. So he's trying to give his speech and I'm going "yes, get up get up get up, PLEASE JUST GET UP I ALREADY SAID YES". Poor guy haha.

For our "facebook official" engagement later this month I've picked out a new ring and we just plan on exchanging rings and then telling our parents, so not too exciting there but I like it better that way Smiley smile I hate surprises.

What great stories! Well, here's mine. Although I had *specifically* told DH "Please make it romantic, like there's some doubt what I'd say"(we'd been dating 10 years, so it was 'about time'), what I *got* was-- we pulled into a gas station, he handed me the ring box, asking, "Do you want to see my new security pin?" and hopped out of the car to pump gas. Inside were both my ering and wedding ring.

Still, we've been happily married many years, so *clearly* the awesomeness of the proposal does NOT predict the awesomeness of the marriage. Or, at least that's what I keep telling myself! Smiley sexy
