Wedding was on the 19th. The photographer was scheduled at 1pm and was fully paid for 9 hours of nonstop photography.(1pm-10pm) The contract stated that there would be 2 photographers (a wife and her husband who own their own business). The wife being the professional photographer whom has several degrees in photography and tons of experience, knowledge, etc. The husband being the one who takes the "extras", admitting that he has no background in photography and is there to help his wife with pictures of decor, cake, candid photos of the guests, etc.

On the day of the wedding I lost track of time (as many brides do on their wedding day) and it was suddenly 2pm. Being that the photographer was an hour late, I contacted the photographer and they said that they would be there soon, as they were on their way. At 2:45pm, the photographer's husband showed up, alone, and called my mother outside to tell her that his wife's father was in ICU and wasn't expected to make it through the night, so she would not be able to make it to the wedding.

I was completely blindsided. This man had no idea what he was doing. He didn't know that there was a detailed shot list given to his wife (thank God I printed a copy out and had it with me). It was as if a random person was given a fancy camera and took photos of our wedding, as he had no idea where to stand in regards to lighting, or what poses/positions to do. My husband and I got absolutely NO photos alone, no photos of just of us and our guys/girls, none of us and our grandparents, none of us alone with our parents. During the reception he was super distracted and on his phone, then HE LEFT AN HOUR AND A HALF EARLY WITHOUT TELLING ANYONE. At about 9:30pm it was time get ready for our sparkler send-off, and he was nowhere to be found. I asked a couple of guests sitting by the door if they'd seen him and they said that they saw him pack up and leave around 8:30pm. I called him and told him that he was paid to stay until 10pm. He said that he "didn't know" and that he was too far away to turn around, as a result, we didn't get any pictures of the sparkler send off as well.

My husband and I have come the the conclusion that we will end up renting his tux again, getting my hair/makeup done, putting my dress back on and taking pictures with another photographer in order to get what we can of the shots that are missing.

We spent a total of 20k on a wedding that wasn't fully photographed and spent $1,200 on an unprofessional photographer whom missed numerous shot. We have also NOT received any money back and the company has not contacted us with sneak peaks, an apology or anything since wedding day.

I am a very understanding person and did not freak out or become rude to him at all. I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND HER DECIDING TO STAY WITH HER DAD IN THE HOSPITAL, BUT..... if I owned my own business, I would AT LEAST call every photographer in the area and ask them to step in given the circumstances, and give them all of the profit.

What do I do from here??? Do I ask for all of my money back, do I suck it up and deal with the crappy photos I have, do I sue for "breach of contract"? I'm trying not to go crazy or be dramatic about the situation, but this was the most important day of my life and there is only ONE chance at wedding photos.

HELP.

Thank you all in advance Smiley heart

I’d wait for your photos before you do anything. You don’t know what they look like and I wouldn’t want to anger the people with such important photos. Once you have them back then you can notify them about any grievances you have and list out the ways in which they breached the contract. Be prepared to negotiate a remedy with them such as a partial refund or reshoot. If they are unwilling to negotiate, take it to small claims court. That’s what contracts are for.

I would go though the contract see what can be done. It is super early for any sneak pics or to be worried you will not get money back. They should have had a sub photographer come in. I would start by looking at the comtract and ask them about the redound.

If her father did indeed not make it through the night 2 weeks ago, it’s possible that she still isn’t caught up on business matters. I’m not excusing what happened to you, that’s unacceptable. But it’s also entirely possible that she agrees it’s unacceptable and is willing to make it right. I’d approach her first from a place of empathy and ask what she can do for you,

Wow. I feel bad for her unfortunate circumstances with her father but the way that was handled was 100% unprofessional. I would absolutely ask for a full refund. That's a day you can never fully get back. I'm so sorry. I hope your redo photos come out amazing and years from now this will be a distant memory you can laugh about.

All of these these have really good points/advice. I would add that the photographer could also pay for your tux rental, hair/makeup, etc. costs for the redo since those costs would not have been necessary had you had the photographers requested.

I know a girl who's photographer claimed all of the photos were corrupted after the wedding...not sure if they lost the SD card or what so they only had photos from friends/family. The photographer refunded all money and paid for costs of the re-do session. Definitely not the same as the in the moment stuff but he tried to make it right knowing his business would never be the same...

I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this nightmare!

If I had to guess, her mind wasn't anywhere but on her father in ICU. Professional or not, that can be a total distraction for anyone. It really does suck though that you didn't get the professional photography you were promised. I'd definitely thoroughly go over your contract and request a sit down meeting with them. Explain how upsetting it was for you, and that you expect some sort of refund due to the service provided (or lack there of). Personally, I wouldn't sue them...I mean, she was dealing with a medical emergency, but that is just me.

I think that “letting it go” is the worst possible advise. Just because it is a small business doesn’t mean subpar service is okay. I was a small cake business and I knew when I messed up and I always made it right. This is no difference. It’s not the photographers fault that her dad was sick, but it is her fault that she sent her husband who was late and left early. It was her fault that she didn’t take care of her customer by finding a new photographer that would actually honor the contract that she created with someone else.

She absolutely needs to pay to pay for the price of the portraits, as well as the hair and makeup, tux rental, etc. that’s the only right thing to do. She can’t get her wedding day back or the moments he missed. He took zero photos of her and her husband together which you’d think would be common sense even for someone that is not a professional photographer.
