Leftover Wedding Dress Material Etiquette

Eryn, on April 4, 2017 at 4:59 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

So I had my final dress fitting today. The seamstress took a lot off from the bottom of my dress to adjust for my height and I'm a bit disappointed feeling like the dress has lost its shape and now has not so much of a flair at the bottom. I've overall not been very happy with the service, so I asked the seamstress today if I could have the leftover materials from my dress, in the hopes that I could go to another seamstress who might be able to give me the shape I wanted. The seamstress said "you never told me you wanted the leftover materials. I got rid of them. Sorry."

I've been searching online to see if a seamstress is expected to provide leftover raw materials back to a dress owner, especially those from a really expensive dress, but cannot find anything. When you had your wedding dress altered, did the seamstress give you the leftover dress materials? Is it acceptable for a seamstress to throw out your materials without asking first?

Nope, I wasnt given mine. I dont think they will give you the scraps unless you ask ahead of time.

I would totally expect a seamstress to get rid of excess materials unless they were asked for ahead of time.

I'm not sure if there's actually a universally accepted policy or etiquette on this, but I would assume that they throw out materials and scraps unless you specify otherwise. The same as alterations on any piece of clothing you normally get!

I actually did end up with some extra loose dress material in my dress bag and we all freaked out on the day of the wedding thinking something had ripped off! And if your bridesmaid dress has a sash, don't take the sash to the dry cleaners with the dress! I've had tons of friends who have lost their sash this way!

Can you work with your current seamstress to come up with ways to fix the shape?

I had a long gown with a train shortened to tea-length. I gave the cut-off material to a friend for a christening outfit for her baby. She decided to instead make a pillow for us from the material.

Have you voiced your disatisfaction with your service with the manager? I definantly would. You really can't correct certain things but they should be able to fix the Dress somehow

Is the service the issue or is it perhaps you're on the shorter side so the part that creates poof is gone, like on a mermaid for example. If that's the case get a mermaid slip to add some poof

I asked for mine up front (before alterations) and she was happy to oblige, notifying me that was the shop's policy.

If the poof is gone, can't you think about getting a crinoline?

You should have asked to begin with. Also not sure what searching the internet is going to do, what's done is done.

Mine did. In fact they were in the garment bag when we opened it in Florida. (We picked up my dress as we were leaving to drive down). She said that she always does for her brides just in case she needs to fix anything with a dress.

Thanks for responses! I did tell my seamstress early on that I wanted flair and asked about getting a slip and she flat out said no, that it would not sit right with my dress. I am of normal height, 5'5, so it is not a height issue. I might try a crinoline or slip on my own, thank you for the suggestions.

My cousin suggested I do this and make the leftover material into a first holy communion dress. But i think you have to ask

I'm not surprised she got rid of it. I think if you wanted the scraps you would have to have asked beforehand. Definitely try a crinoline or slip!
