Lawn games - yay or nay?

Sarah, on July 29, 2024 at 2:02 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 5

Our cocktail hour will be in the courtyard of a brewery and we want it to be fairly low-key and fun. I like the idea of having some games for people who want to do something other than stand around and drink and make small talk. I think there's plenty of space in the courtyard for lawn games like cornhole.

Are lawn games tacky and too casual? Or do people actually play games if they are there? Has anyone seen any that were a hit or particularly popular?

I am still 8 months out so I have plenty of time to acquire stuff if we want it.

Any creative ideas appreciated!!

Not tacky. My venue has lawn games!

I think lawn games at a brewery would be a really fun option!

My venue had lawn games included with the venue rental, since the reception area includes both indoor and outdoor spaces. The games seemed to be pretty popular, as many of our guests played them. I don't think that lawn games are tacky at all for a wedding, especially since your venue is at a brewery. Guests would probably enjoy having an option of something they can do other than just talk.

I don’t love it at all venues, but a brewery sounds like the perfect location for some casual games.

I agree with Andrea. It isn't the best option for all venues, or all crowds. If you have a crowd that tends to get rowdy, someone may take it too far and potentially hurt themselves or cause damage to the venue.

I also feel that lawn games are fine if you want a more casual feel for your wedding, and get kids involved, but there are other ways to do it that don't encroach on the formality.

    For example:
-You can have a musician play covers of popular or well-known songs. Guests can make small talk about the music.
-Having "fun" cocktail and/or mocktail options.
-Make your tables have themes such as locations, animals, etc. instead of numbers, and have a sign displayed during the cocktail hour of whom is sitting with whom. Conversations may begin naturally from there.
-Have a beer burro, llama, pony or some other fun animal as a photo op in addition to passing out drinks.
Note: I did a beer burro for my wedding. Adults had beer and other cocktail options, and kids had capri suns. Everyone loved petting the burros and taking photos with them!
