Lawn Games / Outdoor Wedding Activities

julybride, on November 3, 2016 at 5:42 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

Our cocktail hour and reception are taking place adjacent to a large lawn during the afternoon/early evening. I'm sure guests will be plenty entertained with drinks and appetizers, but I also thought it would be fun to set up some sort of other casual or unique activity, particularly given the number of young children and laid-back family reunion vibe. While they seem popular, I myself have never attended a wedding that had any sort of lawn games, so not sure if they actually get utilized.

What has been the most popular/unique outdoor game or activity that you've seen at a wedding?

We went to a wedding last year that had yard games - giant Jenga, ring-onto-bottles toss, and a giant Kerplunk game - they got used in the beginning, but quickly forgotten about. Guests used them, didn't pick anything back up/reset the game, so they just sat there. For me personally, yard games are a hard pass.

I'd pass on it honestly. The only people I see using them are drunk groomsmen and little kids.

My FSIL's wedding had corn hole, but it was casual rustic wedding and a good atmosphere for it, especially considering the crowd.

But it's not widely encouraged on here. Weddings are not really for games. But if you think you have the right guests for it, it could go well.

I've personally never attended a wedding that provided outdoor lawn games. Looking at your wedding date, I'd skip them...I wouldn't want to be anywhere but in the air conditioning in July, especially if I'm dressed for a wedding.

I'm not a fan of lawn games at weddings. Lawn games at BBQs and family reunions have the perfect casual vibe, but weddings, at least in my experience, have a more formal vibe. It's hard for me to picture women in formal wear and heels tossing bean bags.

I've seen some beautiful cocktail hours held on lawns. In fact, the addition of lawn games would have ruined the mature, elegant atmosphere. As long as the apps are good and plentiful, and the glasses are filled with cocktails, people will have a great time just mingling. The kids? Well, if you bring a child to a wedding, you're bringing someone who would probably rather be at home. If you want to parent at a wedding, then parent at a wedding. Me? I was never interested in melding the two completely divergent worlds.

Unless you're having a super casual wedding, I'd skip them.

We're having corn hole, ring toss and oversized tic tac toe but we're having a large amount of kids attending and we are going more laid back for our reception.

I had a bouncy house at my reception (mainly because I'm such a kid at heart and wanted some time for fun) and it was a huge hit for everyone, not just the kids. It was great seeing adults letting out their inner kid Smiley smile

Why would you want people playing lawn games at your wedding. This is not a family reunion or childs birthday party…

We did have a cornhole set up outside and I saw a lot of people using it, in our case it was especially older people that were not feeling like dancing. We did have a day wedding on a Sunday though with a very relaxed vibe.

    I say, know your audience.

Know your crowd, your venue, and your vibe. I went to a wedding last summer where they had lawn games and people of all ages were playing. FH and I played the corn hole and giant Jenga. It totally worked for that wedding.
