Last name confusion

Cassie, on July 20, 2020 at 1:05 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10
My fiancé is Mexican and has 2 last names, Valdez-Rivera. I am wanting to change my last name but am not sure which one to do. Does anyone have insight on which name I take?

In the Mexican culture, you usually take the LAST name. So in your case, it would be Rivera. 😀 But then again, it’s also personal preference!

Omg i think Im wrong actually! It would be Valdez. My last name is Oblea-Muñoz. Oblea is my father’s last name, and Munoz is my Mother’s. My mom however, is Mrs. Oblea lol

It would be the first of the two names. The fathers name is first, then the mothers. My moms maiden name is Chang Garcia. Now she’s Mrs Chen-Chang.

It would be the first last name because that’s the fathers last name. My fiancé also has 2 last names and I have opted not to change mine because I don’t want a hyphenated last name. So I am keeping mineSmiley smile

You would take Valdez since that is his fathers last name, Rivera was his mothers last name.

Kinda off topic but it is relevant ...Also, be mindful of your states DMV rules when it comes to that. I know in my state if your husband has two last names you have to put both last names on your DL/ID you can't pick.
