Language Barrier

Shawna , on April 5, 2018 at 11:31 AM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 4
So my Fiances parents speak very little English. It has been a hard topic in our relationship the three years we have been together. I want to be closer to his family but the language difference is a constant barrier. I have tried to learn Portuguese but I get frustrated very easily with it. I understand a very small bit but I feel like then I try to speak it I sound ridiculous. My future mother in law is coming with me to a bridal show this weekend per my fiancé’s request. Anyone have any advice on how to approach this awkward situation?

You are not going to overcome this language barrier in the next couple of days. I would inform your FH that if he wants his mother to go with you to the show this weekend, he needs to come along as well. For your comfort as well as your FMIL.

I wish there were shortcuts to learning a new language! Do they also speak or understand Spanish? That could be an easier common ground in terms of vocab and pronounciation? I’d also recommend investing in a language program like Rosetta Stone or downloading an app with daily exercises to help you learn!

For this bridal show your fiancé needs to come as well to help you both communicate!

Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately he is working that day and won’t be able to come.

I would give anything for a shortcut! They have lived here for 30 years and only speak Portuguese. I speak a little Spanish and I have tried that but it makes no difference. Was going to try Rosetta Stone but could only find Brazilian Portuguese which is a different dialect. Duolingo has helped a bit but most of the time I find it more frustrating than helpful. Thank you for the suggestion though.
