Ladies: let's talk UNDER the dress

Mermaid, on August 13, 2017 at 2:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

Shapewear, Spanx, etc! What are you wearing underneath?

I purchased my dress from David's Bridal. They make you wear this corset-type of thing when you try on dresses; it sucks everything in. I looked great in it....from the front, and I considered buying the corset. And then I turned around, and realized my back looked like a busted can of biscuits over my dress! Not a good look.

So I'm on the hunt for quality shapewear. Any advice?

Whatever you decide make sure you test it out for a night! i hate when my legs touch so I bought a brand new pair of spanx that i thought were the exact same as the ones I had at home and they were riding up all night!

I'm struggling with this one. I bought something like a cami with minimal hold(later found out) to it. I need something to hold in my tummy basically without spending loads of money. Wedding is in 5 days.

What sort of dress do you have? That's going to make all the difference. Depending on the style, for the top half at least, you might even just need to get cups sewn in.

I just went to Lane Bryant and bought some Spanx. I might need something close to a corset since I have gained some weight though

    This is my dress:

I don't have a good picture of me in it since I went by myself to DB. Also, I don't have any boobage to speak of, so I'll definitely have cups sewn in.

I was going all corset crazy but turns out my dress has a very serious bodice that requires no help (might get cups put in but probably not) so not getting anything for the top. I think I'm just going to go with a garter belt and stockings for bottom.

No shape wear. Why? Because my FH doesn't need to lift my dress and see that. And no I'm not perfect. I've had 2 kids. I've got mom tummy and cellulite. BUT what I do, do is buy things that flatter me.

So I intend on wearing nice undies and whatever bra or sticky cups my dress requires. The same goes for corset type things. They can be functional and sexy. But if u get it too small it's gonna look bad no matter what size lady you are and they usually aren't comfy for all day wear. So I will say I'm anti shapewear because of the need to look sexy in the dress-under the dress-and without the dress.

@Mermaid I love DB's Oleg Cassini line! So classic and chic. Anyway, for that i'd recommend a long-line corset with a low back so you can so off that gorge illusion!

For the bottom half, I'd go with either long-line Spanx or some quality pantyhose to prevent any chafing. (That's just my personal preference and experience). This might be a time to bite the bullet and get super-fancy, high-quality stockings such as Wolford. Yes, they're expensive but you could take a razor to those things and have difficulty snagging them.

I haven't decided what I'm doing for under my dress yet so I have no help to give. But, I just wanted to say that your "busted can of biscuits" analogy seriously just made my day.

Great thread! I have the same question. I need something to flatten the belly and lift the boobs. My dress has a corset back and it seems low. Everyone keeps telling me to buy stuff for the first fitting, but I have no idea what is needed. I'm assuming my alterations person can help me out though.

ETA - As an African American, I always wear black bras under white shirts. Should I do the same here?

@MDEasternShoreBride you should try to wear nude not black try nude as in chocolate brown. If you can or whatever tone that match your skin tone. If you can try Nubian Skin. There are other companies that have similar colors too. Good luck.

I have a low-cut back illusion dress too, and the standard low-back corsets were still too high. Thank got for free returns! I just ordered this one, which hopefully will work.

This is the back of the dress:

I also will get some kind of spanx, but they also have to be not too high so they won't show. I currently have off-brand ones that come up to under your boobs, but they will be way too high. My dress is pretty forgiving as far as not being form-fitting on the bottom.

My dress has a very low illusion back, so even a long line bra or corset will not work. I am having cups sewn in my dress. I am thinking of doing a sticky bra as well to help fill the cups. Poor little boobs! Lol

I got a corset bra from Amazon and I might wear a petticoat underneath but that's about it.

I'm wearing nude spanx and have cups in my dress. I can tell you from experience that if you have a wedding dress that is remotely heavy or full-skirted, you will be hot and sweaty at the end of the night. Doesn't quite matter what I'm wearing under the dress because it's allllll coming off and I'm getting in the shower before the wedding night!
