Ladies in suits?

Holly, on February 23, 2016 at 3:35 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 27

Hi all! So my FH and I decided early on that we'd have our parties be our nearest and dearest regardless of the typical gender divide. His side will be his two best friends (both female) and his brother. My side will be my three best friends, two female one male.

He's got this idea that his side will all wear suits like traditional groomsmen even though two of them are female. I know "female" business suits are a thing but I wasn't sure on the logistics of it for a wedding. We're fine with either suits or tuxes but he's pretty set on the four of them matching. Was wondering if anyone had seen ladies in traditional suits, either as part of the party or part of the couple. Were there issues with the fit?

ETA: I would be fine with having the ladies in black dresses but after talking to them about it they seem pretty set on the suit idea...one is actively against wearing dresses.

A proper fitting suit for man or women are expensive. I am curious as to whether a lot of women these days even have suits - and if they don't there may not be many places to rent suits for women. I mean, I have a business suit, but I am also a professional.

Out of practicality and logistics, it may be easier to just have all of the women in dresses -- no matter who's side they are standing on.

I have seen many ladies is suits, Best Lady to be exact. It was really cool and it fitted well. I think she might have been wearing a suit that looked like a tux. Either way it looked really good. I haven't seen a lady in skirt suit as a BM though.

My friend's groom had a female groomswoman. She wore the same dress as the bridesmaids, but in black to match the suits.

    I agree with @LadyMonk,

also, if I was a groomswoman, I would hate to wear a suit.

I wore a men's vest and pants. I just got the slim fit one so that it didn't look as baggy. If I would have had to get a jacket, that would have been a whole different story. Vests and pants should be easy, jackets would have to be tailored to fit them.

BUT, I also dress in men's clothing on the daily. If they don't, I think they should wear dresses that match his suit.

FH's best woman is going to wear a suit. I think she's going to look great!

We asked her before hand if she would rather wear a suit or dress. She didn't mind either way, but I think she would look great in a suit. She even started a Pinterest board about it

Could you give them a choice? I know I would be miserable in a suit. For some, they'd be totally cool with it, but I know a lot that wouldn't be.

I much prefer when the ladies are just wearing dresses in the suit color.

I didn't mention- we discussed it with the ladies, one is more feminine but one is very much a "tomboy" and I told them they were welcome to wear a dress or suit or some sort of skirt/blazer combo and they both said suit! They're totally on board with the idea but I'm just concerned about getting suits that properly fit them.

Does he want the shirt and the tie and everything? A close friend of mine has always said he wants me to wear a suit in his wedding but we agreed that it would be more of a fashionable suit than a business suit.

His vision is honestly full matching tuxes for the four of them with vests, ties, jackets, the works. I'm a lot more flexible with what they're wearing especially now that I'm thinking that his idea might be harder to execute.

Holly- all you can do is take them to a mens store and have them try some on. You never know.

I have a friend who was forced to wear a suit for a wedding because she was on the grooms side. She hated it. All the girls on the grooms side did. I think you should ask the party what they want to do. They will be wearing it.

I think everyone should have at least one nice, tailored suit. I have one in navy that I adore (Calvin Klein) and it's my interview power suit. I bought mine on sale and took it to have it tailored to me at a men's tailoring shop. I'd wear a suit in a heartbeat instead of some dress I would never wear again. However, my career would have opportunities for me to wear it unlike a BM dress.

^ I've worn an old BM dress a bunch of times. I've also worn my suit a bunch of times. It just depends on your lifestyle and career. Some people will never use a suit.
