Lace Overdress/overlay Route - Anyone done that?

Cassie, on January 8, 2021 at 11:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15
Hey everyone! I’m at the very beginning stages of planning my wedding, but as a plus size woman with limited options for a wedding dress that won’t break the bank I wanted to start my search for dress options early.

I’m currently exploring the lace overdress or overlay route. Basically getting a pretty simple white gown for the base and having a lace overdress that adds sleeves, texture, etc. to the whole dress. I’ve tried to search and find some but so far have only found a Vera Wang line at David’s Bridal. Has anyone else done this? Any places to search? Or does it seem a little far out of the realm of possibilities?
Also accepting general affordable plus size wedding dress advice!

Do you consider second hand dresses? Some of those on website like stillwhite.com are never worn, some still look new.

There are a ton of reasonably priced plus size gowns available. Torrid has a wedding dress line. Azazie and Cocomelody both have a try on at home program.

I haven’t checked out cocomelody yet. I checked out Torrid and unfortunately they were out of most sizes in the dresses I was looking at currently, so I’m thinking there may be more styles coming soon!

Any local bridal salon will have plus size dresses. Take a look on Yelp for your area and call ahead to see what they have in stock to try on.. But every designer gors up to at least 22/24. A Google search will also give you designers of plus size gowns. Check the search feature here since there may be specific names listed you can look into.

Be open to trying on everything because a model picture will look completely different from real life.

As a plus size bride myself I can vouch there are tons of dresses out there. Personally I wouldn't suggest doing a layer over your dresss. If anything I would pay a local seamstress to add lace, sleeves etc. I can tell you from experience you will pay more having it done at the bridal salon than having it done by a local tailor and bridal salons are also generally limited by the designer what changes can be made to the seess.

Also, local seamstresses generally look to the company that made the dress, as many supply/sell material to match ( you pay by the yard), and
straps, sleeves, overskirts, and detachable trains that are made up and ready to add to various of their dresses, but many salon people ignore these unless pushed. They get more money from you ordering with these changes all made, higher commissions, and can be far less than helpful about add ons. A good independent with wedding dresses a regular part of their work will do more original embellishment, adding on things with finishing touches so they look like they were designed that way.

Yes, for sure. Having worked at a bridal salon, IF the bridal salon itself will even sell you those materials or supplies for alterations/ready-to-go from the designer at all you'll pay a lot more for them and the salon is more likely to push whatever products they have especially if they have a "personal brand" even if it isn't the same quality or doesn't look as good with the dress. Just know that if you get any work done anywhere but where you bought the dress and need something else changed, 9 times out of 10 they won't touch it.

I bought this dress from the Melissa sweet line at David’s Bridal. I negotiated with them (bought late May right when they reopened stores) and paid just under $900 including tax. I loved the dress and thought it was super flattering.

Omg your dress is beautiful! I actually just went to David's Bridal yesterday and unexpectedly found "the one." When my sister shopped there for her wedding a few years ago we had a really negative experience so I was hesitant to go back, but they definitely have a wider range of options for plus size now than they did before.

I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility. I wanted a beaded dress and was surprised to learn that a lot of them were actually simple satin dresses with beaded overlays. I'm sure they have similar dresses with lace.
