Labels for Wedding Invitations?

Mary, on October 6, 2018 at 9:51 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

Did you use adhesive labels for your invites?

I was originally planning on hand calligraphing the envelopes for our invitations myself- (I'm designing the invites) however I'm pushing up to the deadline to send them out and looking for ways to save time. I was looking at labels on Pinterest and then came across a whole rash of things saying how they're tacky and not the "right" thing to do for wedding invitations. I honestly had no idea about this and would never feel bad if I received an invitation with a label- has anyone else hear this? Did you use labels for the envelopes and did you get any negative feedback?

I am looking into using them for multiple reasons- hiring someone where I live is $$$ and I live a hemisphere away from my bridesmaids and family that could help me hand address them.

If you did use them and didn't receive any negative feedback- have any cute ideas?

I did use them and not a single person said anything. I think People over think things like this. Sometimes people and wedding etiquette get a little carried away in my opinion. But I wasnt a big deal at all. I went On the Avery website and used a template I found that matched my invitations.

I’d love to hear what websites other brides used! I want something that I can just enter all my guest names/addresses and then have the envelopes or stickers sent to me!

I just used Microsoft Word and the list of addresses that I created in Excel and it's super easy to print labels. I have tedonitis in my wrist so hand writing 100 address wasn't a realistic idea because my handwriting is mostly illegible. (I am dreading having to hand write thank you notes after my wedding...but will use labels on the envelopes for those too!)

We used labels. No one said a word. I probably wouldn't notice e if someone sent me an invitation addressed to me on a label. The envelope just goes in the trash anyway.

I used labels for my save the dates and all I heard was how beautiful they were. For my actual invites the company I used printed the addresses right on the envelope, so I didn’t have to do anything which was amazing!

I used wraparound labels on my invites and no one said anything but good things. I didn't do this, but you can go on Avery.com and have them print your labels for you.

I've got pretty great handwriting, and so does my (adult) flower girl, so the two of us are writing out all the addresses, we did it for her cousin/my bff's wedding as well

I used labels for mine and no one cared. If you have a good printer you can also print directly on your envelopes ( I did this for the STD's but my printer isn't that great and I was upset with some smearing it did). For my sister's wedding we hand wrote them and I have atrocious handwriting but no one cared.

I printed directly onto the envelopes. I downloaded some fancy, yet legible fonts and they turned out great! I got lots of compliments on them!

We bought a rubber stamp with script writing. It's super cute and we used it for the save the dates. We will also use it for the invitation and thanknyou cards. I have better things to do than writing return addresses for hundreds of envelopes, when all it said and done.

I got my addresses printed but mainly because minted offered it for free. While I think printed or professionallly written addresses are preferred, I definitely understand they usually cost a lot more money than printed labels. I’ve gotten both on invitations and never really cared much either way. If printed labels is what works best for you then I say go for it

I had an old projector and typed out the addresses in the font I wanted and copied them by hand. Yeah my hand was sore after but they turned out awesome. I wouldn’t fret too much about the labels though. Most people look at the return and then open it right away

I had a handful hand calligraphried by my husbands’s coworker’s wife who did them complimentary. The rest I got printed on Minted for free (since our invitations were from there). About a month after I sent mine out, Minted starting offering all script hand styled fonts which look so good and could be worth looking into.

I am jetlagged from my honeymoon and making mobile typos left and right 🤦🏼‍♀️. *Husband’s.

Also, attaching example of Minted’s all script printing from their instagram. They offer other script fonts too!

Thank you all for these great ideas! I think I am definitely going to do labels to save myself time- and since I’m already designing the invitations, I can make them match. I’ll share the photo on here when I’m done!

I wouldn't use labels, but if you have a decent printer you can download nice scripts and print the envelopes out. It is a bit time consuming, but I did it for my save the dates and they looked awesome. Just make sure you buy extra envelopes (some had ink smudges, etc). While I definitely prefer professionally calligraphered (is that a word?) envelopes, printed ones are becoming more and more common, so don't feel bad about that! Just please don't use labels, they look so bad and you've probably spent a lot of time and money picking out beautiful invites!

Pro Tip: Nobody is going to care. I know that sounds flippant, but think about all of the weddings that you've been invited to. Do you remember how the envelopes were addressed?

    I really don't.

Honestly. Most people will get the envelope, open it, and start rifling through the contents. I think that paying for hand calligraphy is a little ridiculous in light of this. Obviously you want your invitations to look nice, but either printing directly on envelopes or using labels is so much faster and less expensive.

Basically, whenever I'm going through "should I go with the platinum option or the budget one," I think, "Is this more important than X?" In my case, X is top notch food and open bar. Why spend like $500 on invitations when that's $500 that isn't going toward ensuring that my guests enjoy top-notch liquor without having to pay a dime themselves? Why pay thousands of dollars on a dress I'll wear once when that money can be put toward ensuring that my gluten-free guests get an actually tasty meal and not flavored cardboard?

But that is my list of priorities. The open bar and the actually-good food spread are pretty much the most important details of the event for me. (As a wedding guest, I don't remember calligraphy on envelopes, but I do remember chicken entrees that tasted more like sawdust and cash bars, and I don't remember those fondly.)

Labels? Nobody's really going to notice after the first five seconds. And they definitely aren't going to remember when they're sipping a Grey Goose martini and choosing between 6 different hot hors d'oeuvres.

That's my take on it. Plus, if you do labels, then it's also much easier to send out thank you notes after since you've already got the labels all set up.

Hi there, I am using clear adhesive labels from Avery, they have a variety of sizes and styles. I opted for the clear labels so that you can't really tell the difference and it gives you the ability to choose whatever style of font you may like to use. On the plus side if you type an error you can always just retype the label as you won't be printing on the envelope itself whereas if you were hand write them and make an error you'd have to use white out to hide the error. They're also matte so once placed on the white background all you see is the lettering, I am serious when I say I could not be happier.
