kiiiinda can't breathe in my wedding dress...

Megan K, on June 11, 2013 at 3:07 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

Anyone else have this issue?? My dress is pretty poofy and it's strapless so I get that it has to be tight to keep it up but I literally cannot take a deep breath. I tried explaining this to my seamstress and she insisted that it was totally ok. I can't help that because English isn't her first language..that maybe she wasn't understanding what I was saying. Is it supposed to be like that?

Tight yes but not being able to breathe is another story. The gown will stretch a little with heat and my the end of the night you may find you are pulling it up. You have 2 options - deal with it as your seamstress isn't understanding you, or get a couple ribs removed...your call. Smiley smile

I thought it was supposed to be this way! My seamstress told me she needed it to be a little big so I can sit down without ripping right through it (mines a fit and flare). She sewed almost like a bra strap into mine so while I can still breathe there's a super tight strap that has different sized hooks right under my girls that can be tightened or let out if need be.

Can you move? Sit? Dance? If it's so tight you can't take a deep breath, can you get it SLIGHTLY altered?

Mine is strapless with a corset backing and corset top. I've had the dress for almost 3 years and I have yet to try and sit down in it...my wedding is in 18 days... ooops

I can't take a deep breath in mine either. I was told not to gain a single pound! lol. I can sit and everything just fine, I just can't take a deep breath!

Haha! You girls are making me laugh. I can still sit, walk, and shake my ass..just the breathing is a problem. She did say that too, that it loosens up after a little while--maybe she knows what she's talking about after all Smiley smile

Yeah, mine was like that when I was at my first fitting but towards the end of it the dress had already started to loosen up.

Yea thats a problem- trust me, you wont want to be struggling to breathe all day or desperate to take off the dress. If it isn't corset back to be loosened, i would have her loosen it a bit or start wearing it to pre-loosen it. I can honestly say that mine didnt stretch out at all...

My dress is strapless but doesn't have a corset...i felt like if i breathed too much the zipper would bust so i took it to a seamstress and she is gonna let it out under the shoulders a little....Like ToBeMrsM said get a second opinion!

I would advise you to take it to another seamstress. If your dress is tight enough at your waist/hips it should stay up with just the boning. Your waist is your anchor.

@ Christine-that's what I was thinking--but the boning is too short and doesn't reach my hips (maybe I have a long torso??) So she added in the stretchy belt to help keep it up, but that was around my ribs too..

Does the boning reach your waist? If so it should be tight enough that the dress will not fall down from there. Then you can ease out the top so you can take a deep breath - which you might want to do as you are standing in front of all your guests!!

What are you wearing under the dress? A corset bra? If so you can attach the dress and the bra together and that will hold it up - in that case you could let it out.

It depends on what you are wearing underneath. I wore a longline bra with side boning and at first I thought it was the worst idea ever. After a While I honestly didn't even notice it...I tried it on a wore it a ton of times before the wedding to get used to it and wear it in more though.

That's how my prom dress was. It's making you skinny. You won't die. And you can unzip and breathe for a few when you're in the bathroom. I doubt you will even notice though once you get the day going.

I wore a 18 inch corset to get my dress on and both sides of the corset were closed tight. You feel the constant pressure but you can survive the pressure if you keep control and dont try to move around too much.
