Kids Table, How Young/Old Would Kids Be

Athena, on March 24, 2015 at 7:15 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

How old would kids be to sit away from their parents, at a kids table and too old to sit at the kids table? Also what age would kids be counted for the plate count?

I'd like to know this as well! Is 4-5 too young and 13-14 too old??

I had a kids table with about 10 kids, aged 3 to 14. The older kids kept their younger siblings in line. It worked out perfectly, and I completely forgot to leave stuff for them to do at the table! We did have pens and cards there anyway for the guest book... so I got a few cute pictures drawn by them Smiley smile

The age for the plate count depends on your venue. Under 2s were free, 2-12 were half price for me.

Also I asked a lot of the parents directly if they would prefer to have the kids at a kids table or with them. The parents of the 14 year old said that seeing she was the only teenager there she was happy to sit with the other kids and not with the adults.

Mrs. T thanks so much! I will definitely ask my venue how they deal with kids for meal pricing and ask the parents about seating. Smiley smile

It really depends on the individual kids involved. I know personally, I would have been extremely insulted and offended if I had been put at a kids' table at 14--I was a sophomore in high school at that point and definitely didn't want to be treated like a kid. I think anything over 12 is pushing it, personally.

I agree with Emily. I don't like the idea of kids tables anyway. I was such a shy kid, that I would have hated sitting away from my parents. Also, I feel like parents should be watching their kids. If you have older kids at the kids table, they shouldn't be expected to watch the younger ones. Make sure you have a variety of activities. 10 year olds won't want to be coloring the entire time.

@Emily and FMW - this is why I checked with the families directly on what they preferred to do.

Sounds good, I guess my major concern is with the littler ones, do they need their own seat, would they sit in a highchair by their parents? That is kinda more the issue I am running into.

I'd check with the parents on that, too--they'll be able to tell you what they typically do in restaurants and other similar situations.
