Kid-free/age cutoff

Fred, on April 2, 2021 at 1:05 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

Hi everyone.

Our cutoff is 14. We know a sibling warrants an exception but what about a step-sibling you're not close to? (big age difference, never lived under the same roof ). Would it be a poor etiquette not to invite them?

While it is always your choice how to edit your guest list, most people agree that random, arbitrary age limits tend to cause friction/hard feelings with those guests who have children under that age. It also can lead to difficulties when households have children on both sides of the age limit. Typically, when age limits are enforced, people choose either 18 years or older (so it is truly an adult only event), or 21 years or older (so that all guests are of drinking age).

To be honest, I think that 14 is a somewhat awkward age cutoff. I agree with PP that most age cutoffs I've seen at weddings are either 18 or 21

Cut it off at 18. That way there's no hurt feelings when you have a very mature 9 year old going on 30 who would enjoy themselves compared to an unruly 15 yr old going on 6.

No I wouldn’t invite them. If you’re not close to them, and if you feel like they are too young where it will be an issue, then don’t invite them. The kid probably doesn’t want to be there anyway to be honest.

I know 14 is an awkward age cutoff but our cousins, family friend's kids,siblings,step-sibs are and will be either -14 or 18+ by the time.

So if that is the case, simply make it 18+. Then you do not need to worry about inviting the step sibling, as they do not meet the 18 year criteria

THANKS. It was my 1st thought but I wouldn't mind (for a sibling/step-sib) either way.

"The kid probably doesn’t want to be there anyway to be honest": great point!

I also agree that you should just make it 18+, it's much easier that way.

I wouldn't have 14 be an age cutoff. I would make it either 18 or 21. Fourteen is such a random number and if you allow some children who are underage then you should really allow all.

I definitely agree that 18+ is a better age cutoff
