Kegs!!

Ivy, on April 13, 2016 at 2:01 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

So i am trying to figure out how much money i am spending on alcohol. No liquor. Just kegs and wine. Can anyone help me decide how many kegs to buy? And how much wine? We are having around 150 guests and i'd say our friends and family like to drink. Thanks in advance!

Just a warning, people are going to argue with you against kegs. Personally, I only drink beer and wine (and margaritas), so I would be happy. I'd get four kegs and 15 bottles of wine. Better safe than sorry.

With that many guests and no liquor, I would get 2 kegs. Well actually... I don't know. Don't they say Kegs are around 150 servings? Are all guests of drinking age?

ETA: I would rather have leftover beer than run out of beer.

Yes! all guests are of age. I just figured a keg would last a lot longer than canned beer. However.... It could save me a lot on buying cups... HELP. lol now im confused. I just want to do whatever is more cost efficient and smart!

Here are the serving sizes of kegs I found.

    Size of Keg

Sixth barrel “mini” keg (5.16 gallons)=55 servings (12 oz) 82 servings (8 oz)

    Quarter barrel/Pony keg (7.75 gallons) = 82 servings (12oz) or 124(8oz)

    Half barrel (15.5 gallons)= 165 servings (12 oz) 248 servings (8 oz)

We did bottles of beer instead because we didn't want to return a keg.

I'm sure not EVERYONE will be drinking beer. Some may not even drink alcohol at all. I'm thinking 3 kegs. and 10-15 bottles of wine.

We are doing kegs for our wedding. We have about 100 guests that will drink so we have decided on two kegs and then some wine. We are having ours at a country club so if they want a specialty drink they can get it they just have to pay for it themselves.

We will have 1 keg (half barrel) for 140 guests, plus 4 cases of wine and a variety of bottles. The keg will be craft beer and the bottles will be domestic (a light, regular, and a cider).

Cups aren't expensive. You can get 100 crystal clear, semi-flexible plastic cups that are perfect for beer from Walmart for $5. They don't look crappy Smiley smile

I think you will most likely get into the second Keg. You could do 2 kegs and then cans if you don't want to risk wasting money on a third keg. I'm sure you can put any leftover cans of beer to good use after the wedding Smiley winking

We are estimating 150 as well and are going with 3 kegs, and we will have 2 specialty drinks. Once created for me and one for FH. Mine will be champagne based so we aren't buying bottles of wine. We were advised by the lady doing our specialty drinks, and her husband who works at the brewery to get 3 kegs. They said 2 would probably be just fine if we wanted.

I can't remember how much wine we bought. We ended up taking some back. Where do you live? In Texas you can legally return wine and liquor if the bottles are still sealed. We over-purchased, but it was totally ok.

Oh and I found cups I'm ordering from smartyhadaparty.com. Someone on here mentioned it in a different post. Just FYI if you want to check it out.

Do not do kegs! because all the alcohol you dont use up will probably go to waste in the kegs. We got bottled beers. When we came back from our honey moon we returned a lot of the beer, wine, vodka and mixers that we didnt use. Specs was so awesome for letting us do that!

Are you ordering them yourself or through your venue? I know where I am from a business with a liquor license can buy full kegs but an individual can only purchase 1/2 kegs.

There are a lot of online calculators that can help you with this. I will say that my caterer told us that if we go with kegs, we will need an extra staffperson and it will cost more to rent beer glasses, so just keep that in mind as well.

Are you having a cocktail hour? Seated dinner? How many hours?

Are you able to returned unopened kegs/bottles?

I would estimate an average of 2 drinks per hour per person. It may be high since some people won't drink, but the last thing you want is to run out. I'd probably buy even more if you are able to return unopened bottles.

Okay so my friend had kegs and it went to waste. You have to return the kegs regardless of how much beer is still in them. I would just do bottled beer, but that's just my two cents.

I worked at a very popular restaurant and we would have to change the most popular kegs every 2-3 days. 2 kegs should be good.
