Kegs or cans?

Rebecca, on January 30, 2018 at 5:52 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10
Planning a laid back rustic wedding. It is not very formal, no catering or anything like that. We are only allowed to have liquor so we are providing beer and wine. Should we allow guests to self pour? Should we buy kegs or cans? How many for 150 guests who are moderate drinkers?

I definitely wouldn't allow self-pour, especially with no food.

Um, neither. I would at least do bottles. Kegs and cans remind me of keggers in College.

Bottled beer. I would at least do some sort of snack food. Alcohol and no food is not a good mix.

I have to agree with PP. Alcohol without food is a terrible idea. Something should definitely be provided to eat even for light drinkers. And self serve us a sure fire way to ensure they are not only moderately drinking.

Not only could this result in people becoming an issue in any number of ways at the reception, but you also need to worry about drunk driving or serving minors.

Oh my goodness, I meant to say NO liquor only beer and wine. ANd we ARE having food, just not catered. Family friends are cooking and serving. I was just adding that in to let everyone know it is super laid back and informal. Basically one step up from a backyard BBQ

Cans, sometimes the pumps can screw up, and it's easier and faster just to grab a can.

Bottles are the best option. You may want to consider hiring a bartender, just in case someone needs to be cut off. It would also be nice to have someone there to open the wine bottles, keep everything organized, etc.

    I won't get into the self-catering thing.

Thank you. They used to own a catering business so I can trust them. Thank you for your concern with that though.

Unpopular opinion around here, but I went to a casual backyard wedding last fall that had a keg and a ton of bottles of wine and it was a blast. Was a good mix of wedding feel and backyard BBQ feel, which was perfect for the crowd (hippie mountain types). They did cater though, despite my friend asking at one point if we thought rotisserie chickens were OK.
