Kegs- can't decide

Juanita , on June 2, 2017 at 12:44 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

So FH wants to purchase 3 kegs and I'm just not sure how to go about this, here's why. So FH's family/friends are HEAVY drinkers, my family not so much. Our invite list is 240 people- would 2 kegs be enough or would we need more?

I have no idea at all about kegs (I haven't seen one since college), but do you have a bartender? Your bartender or your venue will tell you how much alcohol you need for 240 people. It's a LOT.

We needed 2 kegs for college parties with 25-50 people. Try an alcohol calculator: http://bigredliquors.com/drink-calculator/

I think a keg is 160 beers. If they are heavy drinkers, 2 will probably not be enough. That's only like 1-2 beers per person.

Plastic cups and kegs? Is this for your wedding?

Depends on what he is buying, does he mean a large keg or the half barrels?

My caterer recommended bottles, as opposed to kegs.

Any leftover beer in a keg goes to waste. Bottles don't have that problem.

But I second the suggestion that you check with your bartender/caterer, they should be able to tell you how much you need.

The general rule is 2 drinks per guest for the first hour, and 1 drink per guest for every hour after that. <==That's what our caterer told us to get

Your bartender/caterer should be able to help you figure out how much you need to get, i.e. what % beer, % wine, etc. (We're doing beer, wine, sig drink, so we were told ~40% beer, 40% wine, 20% sig drink, but we plan to over buy for all of them just in case.)

Also, there are different sizes of kegs, so what size you get will also determine how many you need.

We ordered 1/6 of a Keg of a Specialty beer that H wanted as his specialty drink. We were Told this would be about 56 beers.

I guess it also depends if that is the only alcohol you are serving.

A 1/2 keg (generally biggest keg you can buy at a store) will give 165 12 oz pours.

The question really is, how many of the guests are beer drinkers vs wine or liquor. If 1/3 of your guests drink beer, they would get 4 beers each, which, if it's a 4-5 hour event, that's cutting it pretty close. Think 2 drinks the first hour and 1 drink per hour after that.

If you're expecting more than 1/3 to drink beer or if you're not offering liquor, then you really need more.

I think 1-2 would be enough. We were going to do kegs as well. Just thought it would be easier to buy different kinds of beer in a variety of 30 packs. Out alcohol list for 200 guests

    12 bottles of vodka

    10 bottles of Jack

2 bottles of 1800 tequila (for shots)

1 bottle of Patron (for shots)

    2-24 packs of Budlight

    1-30 pack of Budweiser

    1-30 pack of Michelob Ultra

    1-30 pack of Dos XX

Drinks are: Cranberry/Vodka, Chiltons, Screwdrivers, Jack/coke & beer.

We don't want to do too much alcohol so once this runs out... It runs out and they will have to purchase their own alcohol.
