Keg vs. bottles&cans

Josie, on September 20, 2018 at 11:50 AM Posted in Planning 0 8
So I was making a list of alcohol for my fiancé to purchase for the wedding, and I put a couple cases of cans/bottles of a few types/brand of beers. I gave him the list of various beers and wines and one of his groomsman had made a comment to him that we should get kegs instead of bottles and cans.

We are not much of drinkers and now he thinks since his friend said it that we should get a keg 🤪 to me kegs are just not classy and I think of frat parties. Also I feel like bottles are more convenient, and will have more selection for guests to choose a brand, and we would be able to save any extra bottles or cans.

the keg would save us a bit of money, but I don’t think enough to where it’s hands down better. Do you think kegs are okay? It’s a small wedding, 50 ppl and maybe 30 of them are drinkers. I want to see what other people think about each one before I start bossing my fiancé 😉 thanks!!

***btw it’s a quarter keg we would be buying from our local liquor store.

I would personally do bottles instead of kegs. I would purchase cases of bottle beer as it keeps the flavor better than can. That also gives you more options to choose from.

For 50 people, I would go with cans/bottles. We have 50 guests also and were thinking of getting a quarter keg until we found out that you have to rent the tap, and buy a bucket and tons of ice to keep it cold from the moment you get it. It seemed like way more hassle than it's worth. Not to mention, if you don't use it all, it just goes to waste. Whereas, unopened bottles will last for months. Another plus, is that you can have more of a variety of beers with bottles and it's cheaper than a keg.

I would purchase cans/bottles from a place that will allow you to return unused/unopened product. This way you can be sure to have enough on hand without having to worry about over buying. I also agree that doing a keg is too informal for a wedding unless it's a casual outdoor BBQ or barn wedding. Besides, if you don't use all of the keg, you're out that money anyway. With the cans/bottles, you'll only pay for what you actually use in the end.

I've been to weddings with a keg and I don't think there's anything not classy about it if it's behind the bar. But it'll be a pain and a waste if it doesn't get used, plus as you said you'd likely end up with fewer choices. And someone will have to worry about returning the keg. For that few guests, I would go with bottles. I actually had a mixture of bottles and cans for our bar and three beer choices. There were glasses if people didn't want to drink out of a can or bottle. We were able to use or give away the leftovers. If any beers are left unchilled, you might be able to return them, and just a note if you buy beer already chilled, it has to stay that way the whole time you store it.

Lol it is a BBQ and a barn wedding 😂😂😂😂 but it’s more formal. I never knew you could return unopened bottles!! Thank you!

I'd do the bottles. If you guys aren't big drinkers then leftover bottles can be saved for later but a keg will go bad at some point.

Also bottles give you the opportunity to offer your guests a lot more selection.

With kegs, you have to think about how you'll keep it cool, and how will serve guests since some people have a hard time if they see a keg and have to serve themselves (if they've never used one before because they don't drink a lot). I'd opt for bottles & cans. You can also get more options and don't have to worry about returning the keg the next day.
