Kay Jewelers

Kayleigh, on August 29, 2019 at 11:06 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19
Has anyone ever had issues with Kays? Got engaged 3 weeks ago and my 10k “white gold” band is already turning a copper color. I’ve seen the purchase receipts and all to verify myself that it is indeed real, but I have to wonder if Kay sold my fiancé a fake ring. It turned my finger green from the beginning but i just figured that white gold didn’t agree with me, but now that I’m noticing the discoloration I’m not so sure that it’s actually real like they said. Anyone else experience this from Kay or anywhere else? What did you do?

Eek, that doesn't sound very good. I know there are a few at home "tricks" to see if gold is real. I'd personally take it to another jeweler and have them tell you if it's real or fake. Then go from there and get a refund if necessary.

I would go to a few different jewelers and get their opinions. If they all say ots fake, then you got duped.

Kay got into some trouble years ago for selling cubic zirconia as real diamonds. Unfortunately it sounds like your ring is fake. I would definitely take it to an independent jeweler to ask if it is or not and then I’d make Kay give you your money back.

Honestly i I told my fiancé he could get my ring anywhere but there. Lol

You ring should not be doing that. I would follow the other posters suggestions of having an independent jeweler assess it, and then take it back with written proof it’s not real. That way they can’t try and give you the run around. That really sucks. Hopefully you can get this worked out quickly and easily.

This is not good. Take your ring to an independent or reputable jewelry store and have them check it out for you. I have heard that white gold has to be dipped every few years to keep from turning yellow from everyday wear, but if your ring is new, it should not already be turning.

That's awful! I would be so incredibly upset. That's definitely not normal for your ring to be doing this! I would demand a full refund and look into getting another ring that will be more durable. I'm so sorry this is happening to you Smiley cry

That looks so fake. I would definitely see about getting your money back and go somewhere else.

I have been told that some people's skin reacts with white gold more than other people's, but 3 weeks is a really short time... My mom has this issue and gets hers re-dipped once a year (some people do not need it that often). But again, 3 weeks seems crazy. I hope this works out for you!

I’ve also just noticed that the prongs holding the diamond are turning. Or am I just crazy?

I’ve heard some sketchy things about Kay jewelers before. Like people sending their rings away with them to get resized and they come back missing or end up getting lost. Absolutely terrible, and I’m so sorry you and your FH are dealing with this. I’d follow what other posters have suggested, take it somewhere else for confirmation of what’s going on with the ring (even though it is very evident), and contact Kay. I’d skip the local store and go right ahead and contact corporate. If they give you a hard time definitely let them know that you’ll be contacting the better business bureau about this situation.

I think you got scammed. Even if the gold was being worn away copper is not the color you would see. 3 weeks is way way too short for issues. Green on the finger is a classic sign of copper jewelry. Eek.

There are one way to "make" white gold. An alloy is added to pure gold to give that white gold look. Also most white gold rings are rhodium plated that gives a little extra shine. The rhodium plating can wear off but should be an easy fix to have done again.

To me your ring looks like it's not a base of white gold and has only been rhodium plated. Changing a yellow gold ring to "white gold"

I suggest you take your ring to a non chain jeweler for an opinion.

    Good luck!

Prongs can move. Try to never put your ring on or take it off by tugging on the prongs. There is way more metal on the bottom of the shank than on the prongs. Prongs can also lift if they get caught on anything. Have a jeweler look at your ring if you are worried. Safer than sorry if your center stone goes missing bc of a lifted/broken prong.

I agree with PPs, take it to other jewelers and see what they say. I personally had issues with Kay’s just ring shopping, however, if you have a Jared’s near you, go there! They own Kay’s but they’ve been so much better to deal with and maybe they could help you.

My ring is from Kay as well. Got engaged in Dec 2018 and absolutely no issues at all. My ring was $10,000 for reference.

We had issues with them! It wasn’t my engagement ring but it was a white gold and diamond ring. We had our family jeweler appraise it the day we picked it and he found 3 small diamonds missing, a prong missing and another prong loose. After researching online I found sooooooo many other stories from people saying the stones keep falling out of their rings from Kays and that the quality of the stones and metals used are really low quality. We decided not to keep the ring. We returned it the next day.
