Kay Jewelers ring re-sizing

Brittany, on September 24, 2019 at 10:34 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 11
I initially got a promise ring from my FH and we sent it in to get re-sized. I got it back and you could visibly see the line where they took the piece of band out and put the two ends back together. Within 2 months that broke and nearly cut my finger. Fast forward 4 years and I have had to send it out 3 times because of the same issues and even had to get a new one because it was getting so fragile from them constantly having to fix where it’s coming apart. Now to my engagement ring. I have had it for almost 2 years and got it re-sized about a year ago. Just this morning the band broke right where they put it back together. So now I have to send that back in for them to butcher it and hope in 8 1/2 months for my wedding it doesn’t look horrible or break. Has anyone else had this happen with Kay Jewelers?

Yikes - this is scary! My engagement ring is from Kay (and we got the package with the wedding band), but I have not had it resized yet. Do you tell them you are unhappy with the quality when you get it back, or do you wait until it breaks and say something then? That's really crappy that it has happened to not one but both rings you've gotten from there!

We have mentioned to the store manager (who is great she try’s to help anyway she can) when we got them back and that this keeps happening and you can see it right away. She has pretty much told us that it’s in the hands of the people who they send the rings off to. She is just as frustrated as us and that’s why she replaced my promise ring with a brand new one, which had to get resized and have the same problems with. I’m just not sure what to do anymore and didn’t know if anyone else had the same problem. Hopefully you won’t have to deal with it!

Take it to a local jeweler for sizing. The same thing happened to me with a ring I owned from Kay. When I took it to a local jeweler (that my grandmother recommended), he said it’s because they’ll resize to any size even if a band isn’t meant to become that big. He was able to add to the band to make it the same thickness all around again and it never happened again after that.

Hmm okay thank you! The weird thing is that the ring was sized down from a 7 to 6 and is doing this. Wouldn’t taking it to somewhere else make the stone warranty no longer applicable? I will definitely have to look into that because I just want my ring normal again 😓

I'm so sorry this is happening to you! My ring is from Kay's and was resized once. I haven't had any issues so far!

Oh I was told that it is really hard to size down so yes I would take it to a different jeweler

My fiancé got my promise ring from Kay. We had the WORST experience with them. Long story short, when we went to look at engagement rings they were so incredibly rude. We ended up at Helzberg and have been so happy with them.

Sorry to hear that! Mine is ready to pick up after re-sizing... Ill pick it up Thursday. Now Im anxious about it. I would flip out! Rings are expensive what if you loose it? Because it broke off and it their fault... then what? I would be so frustrated.

I would suggest insuring the ring through another company just in case anything happens to the ring. My ring is double insured by Zale's and by jeweler's mutual because Zale's has just as bad reviews about the same thing you are going through! And im not playing any games because we spent a good amount on my wedding set. I only pay once a year for jeweler's mutual but they cover a lot more than the name brand protection plans. I pay $55 based off how much my engagement ring and band cost. If the ring keeps giving you issues I would suggest asking kay's to MAKE your ring in a 6 instead of sizing it down. It may take a few months for you to get the ring but then you wont be worried about it breaking off. The pictures you showed are scary.

My ring is from Zales and my situation is kind of similar. You can’t see where they resized it but my fiancé ordered the right in a size 6, I went to get my finger sized and the lady told me I needed it to be 5 and a quarter so we went ahead with the resizing. I got it back and it’s still too big. I didn’t want to resend it back out though because I don’t want them to mess it up or anything. I’m thinking my problem is the material the ring is but I’m not really sure. Once we get the band we’ll see how the resizing really needs to go. Hopefully it will be perfect then.
