K1 visa

Raquel, on March 12, 2017 at 7:53 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

Have any of you planned a wedding while waiting for your K1 visa? My boyfriend and I have set a date but I'm worried that the visa will come too early or too late.

I'm not sure what a K1 visa is. Are you getting married in a different country?

There was one user that did but she's not on anymore. Let me see if I can send her a bat signal.

With a K1 visa you have 90 days by the time the person get the U.S to get married.

I did some research your FH will have 6 months to come into the us using a k1visa and it gives you 90 days to get married. So if it comes early you should be fine. Right now processing times and interview times can make it take 7-8 months to get it.

Sadly my knowledge of K1 visas is all from TLC.

That being said typically the people on that show would wait until they're in the country and plan a wedding before the 90 days is up. So yes it's a quick 3 month turn around but if you plan for it you should be all set. This would help eliminate any trouble if the visa is delayed etc.

I did!! I was so worried about this as well but it ended perfectly for us. We get married in 2 weeks and his visa expires in April I believe!! We sent in the application about may of last year. It took about 5 or 6 months from when we sent our huge application to the day he received his official visa. So then after that point you have 6 months to "activate" the visa and move to the other country. So I think he got in October or November and then he moved here (from Australia) in January!! The process was incredibly intimidating for us and we had to so many concerns but it actually went by fairly quickly and smoothly!!

I'd encourage you to research as much as possible on online forums (the government helplines are not helpful at all)! If your case is pretty straightforward like ours was (no prior marriages or children, clean background histories, years of dating/lots of evidence of visits and relationship) I think you'll be set!! If you have any other questions feel free to ask anytime Smiley smile
