Justified Interrogation???

Berhane, on February 12, 2020 at 8:16 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22

So I was speaking with a vendor about catering and they told me to send my venue name. I sent them the name and address. Then they asked for my phone number because they said they don’t send info without the proper research due to other caterers harassing them to the point where they started a federal investigation. So weird. But I sympathized with them and gave them my phone number. I had to call and email them to get any info. So they write again and said my venue is not on Instagram or google and could I send more info. I told them the venue is newer. I sent the address again and the owners number. So they send the proposal... BUT then send me another message an hour later asking why I was saying “my husband” if im getting married? I was at work so they sent another message asking if I had “any questions or answers”. Then blocked me because I could not respond readily. I married very young at a courthouse and now that we bought a house I am having a formal wedding. My father in law just purchased an old cinema that he transformed into an event hall. I gave them a poor review which they are now disputing. Am I overreacting or was their questioning unsettling? I am still trying to book more vendors but would like to know if I should expect this level of questioning from others.

I would not be comfortable with that at all. Their professional issues with other caterers should not have anything to do with their interaction with potential clients. Not to mention the way their messaging wavers back and forth between professionalism and text message style. I would steer clear from them, might even contact WeddingWire about this.

Thanks Amber. Given how naturally stressful wedding planning is I wanted to ensure it wasn’t me overreacting. WeddingWire is evaluating the dispute to my review but they disabled my access to the proposal on google docs so that I could not prove we were engaging in business. Thanks for the reassurance! This was the first catering business I contacted and I was so anxious this was how my experiences would be. I can breathe a little now.

This is unlike any other vendor I have communicated with, and would make me very uncomfortable. I agree, stay away from them and report them to Wedding Wire.

This is beyond weird. I have never seen a vendor behave even remotely like this. More than unprofessional, they were abrasive and rude. You were right not to pursue a further business relationship with them.

With the fact that the vendor can't spell words out in full would make me feel VERY uneasy. You are totally NOT wrong in feeling upset about this. Find someone else.

This is a very off situation. If anything it might be a blessing in disguise that they cut communication with you. I’m happy you didn’t give them a down payment I feel like it would have gotten inevitably worse.
Don’t let this ruin the wedding planning fun. Best of luck finding a new caterer!

That's very weird and unprofessional. There is no reason for them to bring up their issues with other caterers. It definitely sounds like they have multiple people sharing the communication and no consistency between how they handle customers. I would just move on to another caterer. Good luck!

Girl move on. They are less than professional imo. And I say my husband also because legally we got married in December and are having our public symbolic ceremony marriage next year so why do you call him your husband or not that is none of their business their business is to cater food. Smh.

I would definitely not be comfortable using this vendor, please find a company that is more professional. This was extremely weird. It really felt like an interrogation instead of a company providing information for their services.

You are not over-reacting. They should be reported to the Better Business Bureau in your area. The must be investigated. Almost sounds like a scammer trying to get your personal information. Never give any information to anyone without seeing/meeting/signing a contract in person. Never do business over the phone or by internet unless you know someone or they come highly recommended. This is scary. Thanks for sharing and you did the right thing. NO! THIS BEHAVIOR IS UNUSUAL! Cut them off completely and report them!

That is super weird. Very unprofessional. Almost none of what they're asking is even remotely any of their business. Just send the freaking proposal people, who cares if another caterer is trying to get info, it's called market research and it happens in every industry. On the plus side, you totally dodged a bullet- can you imagine what a nightmare they would be to work with? I would definitely not back down on your complaints of them.

This is odd. I would not contact them anymore and cross them off your list as possible caterers. They probably have issues with other caterers because of their shady business practices! I would leave them an honest review of your experience so other brides are aware of how unprofessional they are! I wish you better look in your planning!

Wow, firstly, HUGE thank you to everyone for your support and advice! I am feeling so much better about how I handled the situation. I told them, through email, that their questioning was very unsettling and invasive. I contacted them because they were in the “spotlight” on this app with a lot of great reviews and like one really bad one. I had really high expectations and was let down tremendously. They’re not on BBB. I reviewed on google and yelp too because they are working on having my review removed from this app.

Report them for sure and find another venue. You don't need any of this . I'm not married to my partner yet but at times I do call him my husband because that's how I see him!! That shouldn't be any of their concern how you address your partner! That's so shady and extra of them.

Figured I would keep everyone updated. They sent a word document supposed to look like a legal document where they searched my father in laws number (saying it was my husbands business number) and acquired personal information about their businesses. They said they will sue everyone for defamation. I let them know I will file a police report if they continue to harass me or my friends and family. They also added two new reviews on google to increase their stars. What a joke of a business.
