Hello! So my fiancé proposed to me last week. I am so excited to start wedding planning. We’re trying to do our wedding as inexpensive as possible (due to us still being in college). Does anyone have any advice/ tips for ways to save big bucks when planning your big day?? I need all the advice I can...

Congratulations!! I agree with everything everyone has said so far but I wanted to add on, if possible, having your ceremony and reception at the same location. It is much cheaper to rent out one place rather than 2. Also some venues offer multiple services such as catering, the cake, financial coordinators and a day of coordinator included in their price which is super helpful and saves money!

Congratulations on your engagement. Prioritize what is most important to you and if people are letting you borrow their stuff definitely do saves so much money. Me and my fiance are borrowing stuff from family and making our own centerpieces. Etsy is a great way to save money.

DIY will save money more than having the wedding vendor provide everything. You can find friends to decorate the wedding venue together. You can find wholesalers online for large quantities of products. The price of the wholesaler will be much lower than the retail price.

This isn't a money saving tip, but one thing I wish I would've asked venues for is sample floor plans and their capacities. My first venue (pre covid) told me the room could fit 300....we signed and then it was well it's more like 250 with a dance floor (WHAT WEDDING DOESN"T HAVE A DANCE FLOOR?) and then I found out that it was like 250 with 10 people per a 60" round, which is NOT industry standard.

For reference, the MAXIMUM should be 8 people per 60" round and 10 people per 72" round. If you're doing rectangles, there are other site references, but a tip I wish I would have known and Covid gave me a second swing at it.

If there is event planning degree at your college, ask around if one the undergrads majoring in event planning would be will to assist in planning for a small fee. My cousin is a wedding planner and those starting off don't charge much or may do it for free to gain experience. Depends on planner/experience. Same with photographers, find some one just beginning their career. Often times they are more creative and go the extra mile to build their portfolio. Go for more lighting, candles, and greenery. Less flowers. Flowers are pricey. Venue wise, try to find a venue that has lots of beauty on it's own so you're not spending extra trying to dress up the venue.
