Jumping the Broom

rozsing, on July 25, 2010 at 5:58 AM Posted in Planning 0 7

Is anyone doing the Jumping the Broom ceremony? If so, did you include it in the wedding program? I know it is normally performed at the end of the cermony. Did you do anything different?

I'm doing it and its not in the program...As a side note I also have to make my own broom because straw brooms are out of season...so for anyone getting married next year who is planning on doing this ceremony make sure you pick up your broom and this fall.

I included it in the program, but only because I read that it was a West African tradition and FS is from Ghana. In the program I have the history of jumping the broom and stated that we are doing it to honor his heritage.

I've played for several weddings where they have included this tradition. Some have chosen to include it in the program, along with a brief history or explanation of the custom to fill in the guests who may have never seen it before. If you think any of your guests will not know the significance, you should probably include a short paragraph about it.

I'm doing it as well. Still haven't decided if I'm going to do it after the ceremony or at the reception. I read that it can be done either way. If I do decide to do it at the end of the ceremony, I will most likely put it in the program so that my guest will have the history behind it. @Lynquin, I can relate to having difficulty finding a straw broom.

I ended up ordering one online.

At my own wedding 4 years ago, we included an explanation of the practice on the program. The after the vows, we had the minister speak a brief history of the practice and then tell us to "jump over the broom and into your wedded lives. After that she pronounced us husband and wife.

I ordered our broom from Stuart's Creations. They have straw wedding brooms available year round. Here's the link. http://www.stuartscreations.com/
