Judgement at Bridal Boutique for my age?

Leah, on November 19, 2023 at 12:24 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8
I'm planning to book an appointment with a bridal boutique, but I'm 18 almost 19, and I'm wondering if they will judge me/treat me differently because of my age?

A good one shouldn’t. Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself if they try talking around you or down to you.

No, they shouldn’t at all. Brides these days come in all shapes, sizes, ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, etc.

You’re a legal adult so there should not be an issue. If you feel judged while you are there, just leave and don’t go back.

Do you think they are going to know your age from the very start? Are you planning to go alone? I wouldn’t worry about it especially if you are taking some older relatives with you (mom, aunts?).

They may. As much as everyone is saying they "shouldn't" it's natural that people have their own biases and fortunately or unfortunately, teen marriage is one of those. It's more important that you're confident in your decision than anything. I would expect that you will receive judgement throughout wedding planning whether it's visible or not. It's just reality.

The boutiques are in business to sell dresses. I don't know how they would know your age unless you tell them. That said, you can't be surprised if the mature adults in your life who know you best have a level of concern. In my own experience I've known no 18 year olds who were ready for marriage. You will continue to evolve, change and grow for quite some time. Your tastes and your priorities may change. The fact that you frame any potential reaction as judgment, rather than concern, and worry about what strangers might think also beg the question of readiness.

I hope not. But we all have things we worry about. I'm nervous to go due to being overweight. Somehow we all need to just focus on the wedding and our partner. Smiley smile

I had the opposite. I was 40 when buying my dress. One salon tried to steer me to very plain dresses. More like mother of the bride dresses because they would be more appropriate for “my age”. I left ended up going to another, picking out a beautiful white gown and was so happy.
