Job Interviews & The Wedding

Deidra, on July 7, 2021 at 4:14 PM Posted in Community Conversations 1 21
I landed a job interview for tomorrow. At what point do I say "By the way, in order for this to work for me, I need a week off in September"? I'm concerned if I'm upfront, they won't hire me. But if I wait until an official job offer, I have a few people saying it may come off as dishonest somehow?

They can't ask in an interview, and you are not required to mention it. I would wait until they give an offer, and then while negotiating the offer (salary, start date, etc) then say it is non-negotiable that you need to take off whichever dates you need, or you won't be able to accept. You are only asking for a week, not a month.

Wait until you land the job, most job's I've interviewed for have asked straight up if you need any time off within the next few months.

Mentioning it in an interview is incredibly premature. Wait until an offer is made, and then make sure they can accommodate it before accepting.

So perhaps around the same time I would say "I would like to give my current employer two weeks' notice"?

HR person here! There’s a good chance they ask you during the interview if you have any travel plans or days off that you’d need this summer. If so, use that opportunity to tell them. It also could come up in the interview if they’re just generally asking about yourself and personal interests. Otherwise, upon offer they should also provide you with the PTO package. I’d use that time to express your excitement and gratitude and inform them of the week you’ll need for your wedding.

I think it depends on what they ask you. for instance a lot of people will ask when you can start and so if you can't start until september for instance, then let them know. or if your start date they want is around the wedding time, then bring it up. otherwise i wouldn't disclose it either.

Some businesses do not allow any time off during the first 90 days. Therefore, I would let them know when they make the offer.

I wouldn't tell them until I received an offer from them.

I'm fairly certain new employers can't fire a new hire due to plans that were arranged before they were hired, so I would not say anything until/unless you get the job.

Hi! I actually got a new job a month before my wedding and knew I’d need two weeks off. I did not bring it up in interviews, but I did mention it before signing my offer letter. I just let them know “hey, I want the job but before I sign this I want you to know that I will be getting married and need two weeks off ____ to ____. I wanted to let you know in advance in case of any issue.” I obviously worded it more professionally than that! They didn’t have a problem with it and they were glad I let them know ahead of time.

0ne of the few things most employers respect. Tell them late in the interview.

I honestly would not mention it, unless they actually have an offer made for you. However, I think it depends on how many days or weeks your planning on taking off, if its just a few days, than I don't think you have to mention till you actually start working. However, if you're like me and take four weeks off, I wouldn't tell them till late in the interview.

Just went thru the same thing. Just started a new job last month with my wedding and honeymoon in August. I did not mention it during the interview process (and they didn't ask). But I did tell them when they made an offer. They completely understood and even put it in my offer letter so I knew those days were set in stone.

I would wait until they ask if you have any planned vacations etc. that’s not usually until you are already hired.

I would disclose this when an offer is made, not before, not after.

My Fiance actually just got a new job and I remember him saying that he briefly mentioned it in the interview that he was getting married in October, so he would need some time off. He didn't give them actual dates and details until he got the offer. Hope this helps!
