Jewish Brides and Grooms! What glass are you stepping on?

Jessie, on July 16, 2017 at 1:19 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

FH and I will step on a glass together and we're trying to decide what. I am not going to pay a lot of money for a special glass. Can we use a glass from the dollar store or is regular glass too thick? I've heard some people say that lightbulbs are a better alternative because they make a louder noise. What are you doing?

I'm not Jewish but I was browsing Amazon earlier and you reminded me of this. Not sure if it's out of your price range but I think it's beautiful.

I've seen light bulbs used at many Jewish weddings because it's easier to break. It's usually wrapped up in cloth so people don't even see it.

Some of my couples buy special glasses from Judaica stores (I'm sure you can find them on line too...). They come in a pretty pouch and most people save them and make frames or mezzuzahs (sp?) from them.

I usually use a light bulb (not one of those curly ones) because very often we're on grass.....) put it in a plastic bag and then in a napkin from the venue. I really like using a Christmas ball for my interfaith couples. It makes a great sound and it's very satisfying, philosophically ;-)

@Celia, we are an interfaith couple and I love the idea of a Christmas ball. What a beautiful symbol! Thank you.

Seconding @Rachel - our rabbi recommended we use a light bulb - thin and easy to crunch and makes a satisfying noise.

We went light bulb. I had asked my husband if he wanted to keep it as a keepsake, but he didn't really see the need. Some friends of mine who did want to keep the glass did something like what @Chelsey posted.

These are all really helpful. I was feeling guilty about possibly using cheap glass or a light bulb. But honestly, how many wedding mementos do I need? We'll already have a ketubah, photos, dried bouquet flowers, a scrapbook, and Greek wedding crowns since we're incorporating FH's heritage, too!

We went to a thrift store and bought a set of two (thin!) wine glasses. DH practiced on one at home and then we used the other. We considered a light bulb, but we needed to drink wine out of it first, lol.

@Emma, lol! I like the "can I drink wine out of it?" test for glass selection!
