jewelry made from wedding dress beads??

Sheila, on October 25, 2009 at 10:09 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

While trying on a zillion and a half dresses trying to find THE one, i came up with what i would think is a brilliant idea, however my mom dont think the same way....i make a lot of jewelry and was thinking it would be cool to take some of the beading off the dress after the wedding and make a bracelet or something out of it. also it could be given to my daughter(hopefully i have at least one!) and she can wear it on her wedding day. what do you girls think? good idea or no? or while getting the beading off of one part will all the beads come off??HMMM

I think if you take it from in indiscriminatry part of the gown, like the back or the train, a)the dress could be passed down, b)the missing beads won't be noticed...i dont think all the beads will fall off, b/c the dress i got from davids originally had beads missing, but it wasn't causing the string to come apart and all the beads to fall out...i think the bracelet is a wonderful idea! it could be her "something old" when she marries, and have double meaning, since it came from the dress you wore to marry her daddy Smiley winking you could always go one further, and make the bracelet, and then find a blue rhinestone or saphire charm to put on it also!

WEEEE HOO!!! i never thought of the blue stonesSmiley smile i thought of this idea because i have heard so many girls say that their mom wanted them to wear hr dress and either it was the wrong size or it was not her style, or in my situation mom no longer has her dress because it burnt in a house fire. but the bracelet would be a part of the dress that i could giver herSmiley smileand wouldnt have to worry about her not wanting/being able to wear the dress!

I think that's a very sweet idea. Just test it out in a place that won't be noticed in case a whole chain of beads are sewn together.

Southerngirl, i forgot that part Smiley winking but definitely try it first, and on the train, if there's alot of detail. that way, if it doesn't work, you can get a needle and make a "loop" to keep the beads from coming off. another thing you could do, if you know you aren't going to sell the dress or anything, is later, before the dress changes color with age, is you could make some kind of hankerchief, and do it out of the same fabric, and make an initial on it with the beads also. see, with the something blue, and the hankerchief, even if you don't have a girl, it's something you can pass to a daughter in law, and therefore it will definitely make it to your granddaughters Smiley winking heck, even if all you have is boys for the next 3 generations, the dress will still make it "down". my grandmother still has the baby blue dress she married my grandpa in, but i know she'd never give up a piece of the lace Smiley smile although, i am thinking of a hat party for my bridesmaids, so maybe she'll let me wear it then Smiley smile

Why dont you take it off after the wedding? that way its not a huge deal. it only takes 40-50 beads plus a clasp. i have a pretty "normal size wrist and i use 42 beads(4mm) and my mom has a HUGE wrist and she typically uses about 45-50(4mm)plus a clasp. and most of the dresses i have tried on have either 3mm or 4mm beads.

I think thats a beautiful idea. I plan on keeping my dress incase I have a daughter who wants to wear it in the future but if not I will definately use some of the beads from it for a bracelet. I think I might go check out my mums dress now and see if there is something I can use from it for something old lol
