Jewelry Insurance with Progressive?

Jillian, on May 8, 2019 at 11:34 AM Posted in Planning 0 10
Hey y’all, so I have a 1/2 carat engagement ring, diamond wedding band, and another diamond band that was my grandmothers. We have progressive for both of our car insurance and was wondering was yalls experience was insuring jewelry with them. We’ve never had an appraisal done either so we’re would be a good place to do that as well.

Do they insure jewelry separately or would it be part of your homeowners insurance? I used to work for them and I don’t remember ever hearing about them insuring jewelry.

You can google jewelry appraisal in your area. We took my ring to a local jeweler to have it appraised and then insured it through our homeowner’s policy for the amount of the appraisal.

You would need to find a jeweler in your area that does appraisals. We chose not to insure with our home insurance because if we have to make a claim for the ring, our home insurance would go up. We went with jewelers mutual.

We got my engagement ring and band appraisee at Jared, where we bought the rings. Try looking at the place you bought them for an appraisal, then got to another local jeweler. Jewelry stores usually have an appraisal event once or twice a month where you sign up with an appointment. The appraisal cost $200, but we found out the rings are worth more than we paid for them. Which is good news.

We went with Jeweler's Mutual to insure the rings. I have Geico for home and auto. They don't do jewelry, but they have a partnership with JM. We pay $25 year, which covers complete loss (think losing your ring in the ocean), theft, damage, etc.

We bought my engagement rings and wedding band from a jewelry store that went out of business. My grandmothers anniversary band was made and then my father reset the ring 20 years ago.

Oh wow. Well then definitely ask around at local jewelry stores if/when they have appraisal events.

Ours is through Geico and we like it! I have both kinds of insurance, the kind if it's lost/stolen but also if a jewel falls out or I scratch the ring. We will probably switch to Farmers in the future to bundle with our homeowners insurance. I would just search jewelry appraisers in your area that have good reviews & head to one! My appraisal cost $200 and took about an hour (my fiance said - he did all this prior to proposing because my ring is a 1.3 carat miner's cut that belonged to my great great grandmother).

Often times jewelry is insured through your homeowners or renters insurance. Take it to a reputable jeweler and get it appraised, and add it to your policy. I’m from NJ and don’t think that can be added to car insurance here, but NJ has insane car insurance laws. My ring is insured directly through the jeweler who made it. It is a custom made ring, so my fiancé got the insurance right when he bought it.

I did Jewelers Mutual as well! It was super cheap too (like $150 for the year). I have Progressive for car insurance and I was not able to find anything for jewelry. I think it can only be as part of your homeowners insurance. To which, there is good and bad for doing this!

It would be a part of your homeowners or renters insurance policy not auto. So go through your housing. I think mine with State Farm was $70 for the whole year for my ring on top of my monthly renters.

I have Progressive homeowner's insurance. I had an heirloom piece appraised and Progressive said it's all bundled under your regular insurance unless it's worth more than a certain amount (I think $5000, but you should check your policy).

As long as you have paperwork on it (appraisals, receipts), you should be ok.
